ok, I was trying things I probably shouldn't. I tried to make anti-x auto boot so modified the slim config file by uncommenting auto_boot, default-user and changing the name from demo to mine. well of course, now it will only boot to the terminal and I have no idea how to get to the slim file to re-comment it so it will go to the log in screen. help me lol

You could use mc (midnight commander) from the terminal.
It dose not need X and fix /etc/slim.conf.
or use vim or nano to edit the file back.

add: nano /etc/slim.conf

thanks, I kind of gave up and just re-installed Anti-X, which worked also lol. but now that I've re-updated things, I am getting some wicd error when I log in. although I think that's for wireless which I don't need. just annoying having the pop-ups

If you can't boot to the graphic desktop then you may log in as root, open slim.conf with nano as harii said and edit it.
Here's mine (just the default no auto-login):

Code: Select all

# Path, X server and arguments (if needed)
# Note: -xauth $authfile is automatically appended
default_path ./:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
default_xserver /usr/bin/X
xserver_arguments -dpi 96 -nolisten tcp

# Commands for halt, login, etc.
halt_cmd /sbin/shutdown -h now
reboot_cmd /sbin/shutdown -r now
console_cmd /usr/bin/urxvt -C -fg white -bg black +sb -T"Console login" -e /bin/sh -c"/bin/cat /etc/issue; exec /bin/login"
#suspend_cmd /usr/sbin/suspend

# Full path to the xauth binary
xauth_path /usr/bin/xauth

# Xauth file for server
authfile /var/run/slim.auth
# Activate numlock when slim starts. Valid values: on|off
numlock on

# Hide the mouse cursor (note: does not work with some WMs).
# Valid values: true|false
hidecursor true

# This command is executed after a succesful login.
# you can place the %session and %theme variables
# to handle launching of specific commands in .xinitrc
# depending of chosen session and slim theme
#
# NOTE: if your system does not have bash you need
# to adjust the command according to your preferred shell,
# i.e. for freebsd use:
# login_cmd exec /bin/sh - ~/.xsession %session
login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session

# Commands executed when starting and exiting a session.
# They can be used for registering a X11 session with
# sessreg. You can use the %user variable
#
# sessionstart_cmd some command
# sessionstop_cmd some command

# Start in daemon mode. Valid values: yes | no
# Note that this can overridden by the command line
# option"-d"
# daemon yes

# Available sessions (first one is the default).
# The current chosen session name is replaced in the login_cmd
# above, so your login command can handle different sessions.
# see the xinitrc.sample file shipped with slim sources
sessions fluxbox,lxde,xfce,fvwm-crystal,kde,gnome,openbox,icewm

Also you can browse here to the forum by using the links2 browser.
When you're at the console you can have several different screens (Alt+F1, Alt+F2, Alt+F3.....,Alt+F6) so you enter Alt+F2 to open another screen, type links2 to open the browser and navigate ( g opens the adress bar and esc opens the menu). When you want to edit /etc/slim.conf you press Alt+F1 to go back to the original screen (and alternate as much as you need).

Edit- for wicd:
# apt-get purge wicd

then open ~/.icewm/startup and comment the wicd line (just to leave things clean since if you purge wicd there won't be anything to start).
tip- `apt-get remove' removes executables and data, `apt-get purge' removes config files also.

if he was not online he would use ceni which dose not need X.
But he did the easy way and reinstall.

I messed up slim many times.
