After working hard for almost 30 minutes, my system is up and running:
Image

A bit large, running at almost 155 MB, but isn't it beautiful?

***
The same environment after stopping some services:
Image

Without IOtop:
Image
Now it runs at 127 MB.

***
After removing almost all applets, and background picture, it goes down below 120 MB RAM:
Image
With only 512 MB system memory, it would be around 95 MB. (tested on virtualbox)

***
And I stopped here:
Image
If even lower memory usage is needed, we can relogin to jwm.

This time I have created a new conky conf file. It looks like this:
Image

The only problem is, that if I set 'own window' to yes, then it's not transparent. If I set no, it is transparent, but all desktop icons are disappearing at every update. I stop here for today.

Give me some time to limp over to the motorcycle shop and I will upload my Mate
Desktop ~/conkyrc text file. I have lot's of options that come into play between fluxbox and Mate Desktop conky's. You'll have to uncomment one of the"own_window_type" entries to get what you want in Mate.

With my xfce desktops I need this option for the own window to be transparent instead of a solid color, and not override the desktop

I already edited this conkyrc settings to get transparency on this Mate screenshot.
Might have to use"conky &" in terminal to get it to take.
I stay in fluxbox mostly. Mate was just a self learning g exercise.
Wallpaper is by Sakasa.

I have updated my homepage. Now some linux & AntiX advertisement is included with some screenshots.

Here I'm watching a video about AntiX on AntiX running on a virtual machine on AntiX host:

This time a screenshot on AntiX 13.1 & Mate 1.6 started with my autologin scripts. Since the default shutdown button in Mate desktop doesn't work without a display manager like lightdm, It was replaced with the AntiX exit script. The shutdown icon is borrowed from XFCE.

I have recreated the same desktop configuration under XFCE, just for fun:

My new PC arrived, I have modified Conky to run nicely with Kaveri A10-7850K. Still XFCE. I have managed to break Mate for default user during my learn by exploding experiments. __{{emoticon}}__

Conky config for Kaveri:
