in my low-end system(see signature) i've tested many mame32 versions through wine and 0,74version seems to run fine!
i suppose that since i use wine for it, it uses more ram.
from the other hand i've tried sdlmame but it's too heavy for my system.
unfortunately the web site of xmame(old versions) is closed!
could anyone guide me please?

xmame can be got through the repos. Try the following command (as root) in the terminal:
If it doesn't work copy the results of your sources list:

The x-mame project stopped at version 106 years back, but I used to run mame on old IBM pii back in the Windows days and that ran well*; that I think was v100. (the Windows and Linux versioning are in step with one another.) v106 is the old type without the game menus so I think you should be okay.
Just try it is my top advice. __{{emoticon}}__
*Just remembered I started out with 128 ram, and upgraded: I forget now if i tried mame before doing this.

There are graphical frontends for xmame (in the repos) but I never use them so can't help you much i'm afraid. I'm not sure that cloned games show up on these either, but I could be wrong.
You can go fullscreen and add scanlines by typing a command as follows:
(there are different effect #s, but I like 8 )
I'd ask what you're playing, but probably not such a good idea __{{emoticon}}__

If you mean its complaining about xmamerc then I get the same thing. (I guess xmame just can't, or elects not to do what's at those lines.)
As for the missing openGL libraries, try installing libgl1-mesa-dev.

I do a end around to play games in dosbox in Antix. I download the free games from

. I pick the freeware games mostly. I make a directory in /home in rox and name it oldgames. Every game before I download it I make a directory in /home/oldgames and give it the name of that game. I extract the game zip in that game folder.
Then set the run action as /usr/bin/dosbox for the .exe file. I do this on my IBM A22m 1000hz, 256MB ram, 700MB /swap, Antix 8.5 wheezy Laptop. Works OK for some games. Some run too fast (mushroom, it's like centipede). Others run slow but run (like clone invader). Like I said. A end run around.
Works for me.

yeah i already use dosbox and runs great though i also love to"insert" unlimited"coins" and play as much as i like the arcade games that i was playing in the past! __{{emoticon}}__
i was trying to find the configuration file of xmame but i was so unlucky... doesn't exist??
i think a frontend would make things easier not only for me but also for other people who might use the same system but aren't very comfortable with the command line etc.
i guess i could just make a script for this but there would be more than 300 games-scripts.
EDIT:
i found these

i guess it's xorg.conf now, right?A better choice is to set up some low resolutions display modes in
your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file

Yeah, I took a read of that .pdf the XF86Config file would be for the XFree86 fork of Xorg, but without looking I don't know what this corresponding file would be. I guess the resolutions for some of these old arcade games are so low that they're not even offered up as options on your modern day PC!
Whatever config file grandr refers to is my guess.

so... the first link told me how to make the configuration file!
xmame starts in minimized window(default game's mode and then with alt+home/alt+ins i can resize the window!
i've tried one game only(rastan!!) until now and the speed/sound seems fine.
a problem is that when i start xmame fullscreen, it crashes and i have to reboot!
regarding the opengl message, could it be that i dont have opengl enabled or something?
do i need to install the .dev package? i ask because i think it's not stable and apt asked me 2 times for confirmation...!

You really only need to create xmamerc if you're compiling from source, or if it isn't included as part of the pre-built binaries downloaded from a package manager. Like the author of that .pdf, you have it already at /etc/xmame/
(/etc is typically -thought not exclusively! - used for config files)
I just ran a reinstall of libgl1-mesa-dev and it ran fine with just the one prompt. What is yours showing? (post the results)
Code: Select all
cat /etc/xmame/xmamerc
