Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded to another box with an MSI mainboard and AMD64 cpu. Runs great and I had no installation problems with 13.2. But when booting it reports 'OVER-CURRENT CONDITION' on all 4 usb ports. Does anyone know what this means and is it likely to affect the speed of these ports? It seems slow writing memory sticks compared to other similar aged boxes I use with 13.2.

Best wishes,

It seems that the usb ports are damaged.

You might be in luck if this works

Thanks Anticapitalista,

My ports are usb 2.0 so it's worth a try. The ports do work, but I feel they are slower than expected although the pc is old and only a modest spec.

Best wishes

Hi Anticapitalista,

I looked in / etc/ default / grub to add the suggested line to suppress the Overcurrent Condition check, but that path does not exist in my 13.2 64-bit installation. / etc / default does exist but in that folder there are no subfolders, just flat files.

In any case that fix is for Ubuntu and this isn't Ubuntu is it ?

Have you any suggestion where I might try inserting that line or any other way of fixing things ?

This may just be some kind of warning because 3 of the 4 ports work fine, the 4th is internal and unconnected, except I just got the feeling they run a little slow compared to a similar spec PC I am using upstairs, except this is an MSI board and the other an ASUS. Maybe the ports are defaulting to USB 1.0 specification ?

Thanks for your time on this, it isn't an off-road problem.

Best wishes

If you have not updated grub yet. The edit should go in /boot/grub/menu.list.

The" over-current condition on usb ports" -message I also had one time with an old pc during boot and on dmesg. The ports have been slow and sometimes didn't work.

In the end it was only dust in the usb-ports. I cleaned it with a vacuum-cleaner and the message and slowness were gone.

Maybe you try.

When I put this PC into service it had been filthy inside and out having been in a college. I blew it all out with the compressed air and it is spotless including all the sockets and wherever dust cal be attracted. But Iĺl give it a go anyway. Thanks, Roland

Hi Anticapitalista,

I tried your suggestion adding [ehci_hcd.ignore_OC=1] to the grub menu.lst, but it did not suppress the overcurrent warning messages. Can you look at the attached but of file and comment whether I added it correctly ?

Best wishes
