hello,

I have Antix on an old HP Compaq 615, and I had set up an automatic login. Since yesterday, however, after booting up, I get a login screen asking for a password. When I enter it, the screen goes dark for a second, and then the login screen is there again. I am obviously caught in a loop. What can I do to get out of there?

I can still login on the console after pressing CTRL+ALT+F4.

I am grateful for suggestions to try before reinstalling a fresh system.

Which version are you using? Does using a different window manager help ( Press f1 at the login screen) ?

Thank you for the quick reply. Pressing f1 when I am on the login screen does not do anything, so I guess I only have on window manager which is lightdm, or is this X11? I am not sure what is the difference between the two.

Logging in on the console tells me that I am using MX 14.3 with Kernel 3.14-0-bpo.2-486

I think your MX-14.3 install might have been only partly upgraded to xfce-4.12, instead of having the full upgrade (dist-upgrade).
