Though You can try any of the others if you wish. Or. Go with a

I did fit a linux install on a 128MB sd card once. Way different type of install than you are probably used to

That is old stuff and I have moved on since then. I don't even dabble with SolydX or that SD card anymore. Plus that laptop was sold.

Edit: Another small Linux edition I know of is

Ok. Some other distros I've been told about is tinycore and DSL. Tinycore will run but won't install. No gui installer and tc-install in the terminal yields a file not found error. DSL won't run at all. Has some problems. Didn't look to far at them. I could go with tinycore but I need an installer. And some way to get other packages for it without Internet unless there is a way to get a pcmcai Linksys wireless g adaptor working. It worked under Windows 98 before that gave bsod's at every turn. Any ideas?

suggestions for other distros:
slitaz (teeny tiny)
some puppy linux variant (some of the puppy variants cater to old gear)
some way to get other packages for it without Internet
remove the hard drive, attach the drive to another PC, perform the bulk file transfer, reinstall the hard drive

If tried vector Linux light. It did not go. I put the disk in my windows 7 desktop and connected the compaqs hdd through my adaptor. The installer seemed stuck. It was in the part where it says preparing package installment? for too long it seemed. What is nice is I was able to play a few games on vector Linux while it tried the installer. I tried antiX. It installed to the hdd fine. But the Compaq won't boot. I'll try later today maybe DSL and tinycore. I can get an Internet connection onto the desktop. By moving the wifi booster near the computer with a lan cable to the desktop.

I don't think so. It will take the Windows 98 install disk and run through it fully installing. I don't know why it's so picky here. It will take like an hour or so of reading the cd and installing the hdd.

if you put the hdd you are installing to in an adapter... won't you get the wrong entries in grub?

It's in a usb to ide adaptor. The adaptor has sata, 2.5" ide and 3.5" ide. I would think it would act just like a standard USB drive. I tried vector Linux again. It's definitely frozen in the install screen. I left it for like 6 hours. I think it's something with it saying some partition exceeds the cylinders? Don't know exactly what it means but I'm guessing the formatting tool in vector Linux is acting up and not liking my 4.3gb hdd. Might try it on a 32gb USB drive to see what it does then.

Ps the Compaq model is
It has series (pp2060)
I'm guessing this is a serial number (av3 c1400t2s4dm6458)
Another sticker has the as model number (1456vql10j)
And of course it's a Compaq Armada V300

Vector Linux light won't even get past the"preparing package installment" screen. Even when using a 32gb USB drive. I don't know why. I may try an older version of vector light later. See if it goes.

And what sucks is damn small Linux won't even start up. Even on the Windows 7 desktop.
