In the german edition of the linux-user 02.2016 there is a big part of"small" distris for older hardware:
4MLinux
Antix
SalentOS
Slitaz
and other:
MX Linux
Bunsenlabs"Hydrogen" (former Crunchbang)
PCLinuxOS MiniMe
and small webbrowser:
netsurf
dillo
links2
w3m
lynx
elinks
netrik
Antix and MX got very good critics (performant, functional, stable, good manual, suited also for beginners).
And let me also say a very good forum.....
A part of the magazin is free for copy:

thanx!
Dillo and Links2 (xlinks2) are extremely useful if you are on a very slow network,
this sometimes happens to me in the country when my mobile net runs out of quota
and the bandwith goes down to a few kb /sec.
In this situation Dillo/links will load an article/page as fast as normal.
several of the distros here were new to me
