Anyone know of a good list of lightweight apps. In particular I am looking for a good photo manager and recipe manager. At the moment I am using krecipes and digikam but that sort of defeats the purpose of using a lightweight distro.

Sylpheed-Claws is a good, lightweight email client (check synaptic or apt-get from terminal).

Ted is a very lightweight word processor although Abiword (comes with Antix) has greater functionality and is pretty much lightweight.

Dillo is a lightweight browser.

Do a Google search or two to find others. Be careful what you download / install, however. Try synaptic / repositories first.

Does anyone know of a little desktop calendar app? The ones I tried from synaptic were all full desktop apps. I really miss the little pop up calendar that was part of the kicker clock in kde.

Have you tried orage I use it under xfce.

apt-get install xcalendar-i18n

Basic but small calender.

$ cal

it comes by default (at least in Debian).

orage wanted to install xfce-panel; since I'm using just fluxbox and rox, I didn't install it.

cal in a terminal is fine, but I have to do more than just click something: yes, I'm lazy. __{{emoticon}}__

Xcalendar won't install on my Spartacus system. Terminal reports unresolvable dependencies. Synaptic wants to first uninstall pretty much the whole operating system. This is because I'm running Spartacus and not M7-beta, right? If so, no problem. (Just checking to make sure some other glitch is not afoot).

Xclanedar installed without a hitch on Antix_M7_Beta2 but, like you, I had no luck at all installing it on Spartacus. Gdeskcal, which is very similar, installs on either and runs fine.

There is no application program; just the javascript and CSS contained in the initial tiddlywiki.html web page. No need for a web server. You only need the web page and any browser that supports javascript and CSS. (E.g., Firefox.)

An empty tiddlywiki web page is about 270 KB. You then add your content. The result is a larger web page with your stuff. No other application program or files.

There is a little learning curve, but no programming required. Its more like learning a new word processor or presentation program.

The real beauty is that tiddlywikis are almost infinitely customizable and useful for many purposes. There is a huge user community.

The best way to learn is to dive in and be willing to"play." Mistakes are OK; that's how you learn. You'll quickly"get" the idea and start to think how you might use them. Then you may have to learn a new technique or two (just as you did learning word processing) for each new improvement you make in your project(s).

Best thing, besides the small size, is that you have absolute control of how it turns out. Also, it is fun to"tweak" your wikis to make them exactly the way you want them.

As a bonus, you can share them online free for collaborative purposes. Say, a community recipe book.

Alternatively, you can email them since they are just an .html file. Anyone with a modern browser can recieve and use their emailed copy of your tiddlywiki. They can cut/paste recipes and print from them, since they're just .html web pages.
