In this post, I just wanted to write down some thoughts on a possible laptop metapackage (hence a set of several packages explicitly for laptop use). I allready wrote down a suggestion for a new flavor of Antix (see post37461.html#p37461 ), and a metapackage for setting up a personal server (the latter of which can be combined with this new flavor, see post), but I feel that a laptop metapackage can also have its merits for laptops.

This metapackage would consist of:
* GPS device drivers ?
* webcam drivers ?
* additional communication software, GPS trackers, ... as discussed in

* communication software (online-only instant messenger, ie Pidgin, ... see also post37461.html#p37461 - longhouse_inside_description.txt-
* the GIMP (allows copy-pasting of maps and editing therein from gvSIG for GIS-tasks)
* perhaps some other tools for artistic tasks, such as Google SketchUp + wine (see

gvSIG and openCPN could be called"GIS" software packages, but would be used for navigation instead. The advantages of them are:
* very lightweight (in comparison to QGIS and GRASS GIS)
* very simple (much easier to learn for 1st time users)
* able to download maps from a database (unlike others like Google Maps, ...),
* able to be used as GPS navigation software; en-route navigation e.g. when using a laptop

I think you need a different name for that collection of programs, they are nothing to do with using a 'laptop'; maybe a better name would be 'GPS Metapackage'.
