Hi !

Sorry to ask a dumb question here, but how do I install KDE 4.1?

Do I have to change my sources.list ?

Here it is :

# See sources.list(5) for more information

# This file should be edited through synaptic

I was unaware of that 4.1 backport repo. I have only seen it in the experimental repos.

I would keep Mepis off the list as well as sid unless you have already upgraded to sid.

What I did was disable stable, sidux, and Mepis.
Add the backports, enable sid, and add experimental . I also installed aptitude. Use aptitude to then update and install kde4.. worked great. But I don't like it.. I'll stick with 3.5.9 until Warren releases KDE4.

Like xToeCutter I too disabled Mepis, stable, and sidux. I have just downloaded KDE and it is working great with the SLiM display manager. This is a real nice setup.....especially now that it is using the"Lenny" repositories. Cool....very, very cool. __{{emoticon}}__

Regarding the KDE environment. If you choose to use it do so with the KDM display module. If you use the SLiM display module you will be able to logout of KDE but not shutdown or reboot. The KDM module remedies all that hassle. Also Antix is by far the most configurable operating system I have yet to use. Great job! __{{emoticon}}__

I have found KDE 4.1 to be a pretty usable desktop environment, but at least for me, I keep it on completely separate partitions and distributions. I have KDE 3.5.9 and XFCE 4.4.2, plus a variety of window managers and applications on sidux, my other big favorite, then I have Fluxbox and IceWM, of course, with my antiX installation. I have a released version, then I have a heavily customized version that I have modified by changing the repositories, then using smxi to create a hybrid Debian Sid based system that is similar to sidux, but it also still has the MEPIS kernel available to me in case I want it or need it, and it also has the lighter overall antiX look and feel.

When I want to scratch the KDE itch, I leave the sidux and antiX systems alone and go to a KDE 4 remix. The Kubuntu project has published a few of these. I first tried the KDE 4.03 remix along with Kubuntu 8.04. Most recently I have tested a KDE 4.1 remix that is part of the Alpha testing cycle of Kubuntu 8.10. That is actually moving along very nicely. I recommend trying that; it is pretty good. That way you keep your lean and mean antiX machine intact on one partition (you can install it on USB if you need to do so) and you can play with the cutting edge systems on another partition or another USB drive. I am doing that and having very good results.

Of course, if you really want to do so, you can modify your list of repositories that come with antiX and install KDE 4.1 there. My idea is just another alternative that has worked out really well for me. Whatever you try, I hope it works out well for you, and do let us know your findings and your thoughts on them.
