I've just installed Antix 7.5 on my old Celeron 600MHz 256MB ram machine. I'm impressed! BUT: how do I set the screen resolution so that it is still right when I next boot? When I click on"Save setting to System", I get a message saying that /usr/local/sbin/setxorg is missing, and the settings don't get saved.

NEXT: apt sources.list. It says use synaptic to edit- but when I try it, there are three fields of info to enter. My source (for my printer driver) has only one field of info- the first one. The file does not get edited. Can I edit it by hand?

If I can get those fixed, Antix looks good. I've used Debian (too slow on old m/c) and Puppy (great little distro)

Can I upgrade to 8.0 without re-installing? ie"Aptitude upgrade"?

Welcome to antix gerry.

For your resolution you can edit, as root, /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You should see several lines like: Edit the Modes line placing your desired resolution at the beginning.

As for your printer, what is it. Make, model etc. What are the"sources" your trying to enter? The drivers are probably available in the stock sources.list.

When M8 goes final anti will most likely have a script to bring the test releases up to final. Soon I hope.

Thanks. Printer is a Canon i965. Stock (Gutenprint) drivers don't work. Source is Kyoto University, I've used the driver in Debian (it's a deb package) and Puppy.

Updated apt sources.list by hand, and downloaded and installed the driver ok using Synaptic.

My printer is connected to a Windows machine. I thought I knew all about setting that up, but I can't work it out in Antix. Is this documented anywhere?

In the control center under peripherals there should be"set up printer". If you are on the same network and part of the same WORKGROUP the printer should be seen. Another option is to use the cups web interface via a web broser at localhost:631.

I'd already tried those without success.

Whatever version you using now won't be obsolete. The software itself will always be upgradeable and when M8 goes final anti should be making a script available to bring in any new features that you don't have installed such as additions to the control center and themes.

For the printer to be seen by the installer make sure it's share out by the windows box. The driver you mentioned may not be installed in the standard Debian manner so you may need to point the installer to the ppd file(printer driver). The installer has a default place to look but will allow you point it somewhere else. Also don't forget it will be seen as a smb://WORKGROUP/server:631/printer" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false.

Just to make things simpler I connected the printer directly to the local usb port. It was configured automatically, but did not work. So I went to localhost 631 and did it manually. Still won't work- not even the test page.

CUPS error log shows an error with the filter"pstocanonbj" -"stopped with error 1".

When installing the printer using cups interface, the installed Canon drivers appear in the driver list, so installing the printer is just as though one were using Gutenprint, don't need to supply ppd (which just points cups to the driver).

Try testing your printer on an application rather than the Test Page button; that worked better for me, but I have an hp printer.
