Hi,
I tried to install this printer by means of the printer setup, but then I can not choose this printer. Now I read this 'manual' on
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Install_Canon_ixxx_Printer_Drivers"
linktext was:"http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/ ... er_Drivers"

. I had to install alien and use apt-get update but then it worked well until I got to step 4 and this warning:
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""'
!!! Warning! The info contained in this article pertains to older versions of MEPIS !!!
(I had to add the Ubuntu Universe Repositories in order to retrieve the libtiff3g package (at least at the time of this writing, it may become available in the Mepis Repositories in the future).
They are:
(deb

url was:"http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu"

Once the libtiff3g package is retrieved, I would delete or disable these repositories to avoid other problems.
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Can anyone explain what this all is about. It is beyond my linux knowledge, so I do not know what to do. The steps before described what to do, but now I do not know __{{emoticon}}__
By the way I finished step 3 and tried the printer setup again. Now it even recognizes a i455 printer USB printer in the first step. Not in the second step though, I could not choose a driver. I finished the setup and the printer was available in the printers screen as 'Ready'. I made a document in Abiword but the printer did not react.
When using the CUPS administration tool via localhost I get this message when trying to print a testpage:
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonbj failed"
Also it says the URL can not be found which I think is:
"Device URI: usb://Canon/i455"
Hope you reader can help.
Thanks,
Piedie

Thanks for the tip. I read that one already. I wonder if you could tell me what to do if I want tot do what is described after this Warning in my previous post. I visited the links, but could not find what to download. And if the download succeeds what should I have to do next?eriefisher wrote:Here is some info that may help.

I can add some more info from CUPS. Maybe it will give you a clue.
When setting up a printer CUPS recognizes the i455. It gives two choices in the device list:
The Model/driver I can choose is not for an i455. These are the models (I think) from the installation I described before. I choose Canon Pixus 550i.
The printer state is: idle, accepting jobs, published
When I print a test page the Test page State is Stopped.
Does this shine a __{{emoticon}}__ on my problem? __{{emoticon}}__

I looked at this site OpenPrinting database.
There it says:
"For Debian Etch install the following packages cupsys cupsys-driver-gutenprint foomatic-db-gutenprint"
Where can I get them and do I have to install with dpkg or what?
I must say: Pretty hard to keep going.
Done that. No result. Printer state in Abiword: Ready.anticapitalista wrote:Try printing from within abiword.

cupsys-driver-gutenprint
foomatic-filters
lpr
magicfilter
ghostscript
gv

Then try cups again.

Please don't give up yet, you have come along way. Try what anti suggested. The good news is the printer is recognized so we know it's just a driver mismatch. You may also want to try a different driver selection since alot of printer are similar another one might work.Piedie wrote: I must say: Pretty hard to keep going.

I like finding out things myself and make them work, but it is kind a hard to find my way around and find the right information. Thanks God, you guys are willing to help __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__
I will do what Anti wrote. You know, I know I want to do things by just clicking and choosing options. What does it take to know what anti suggested. Am I a sort of linux guru by then. Or am I impatient?eriefisher wrote:Please don't give up yet, you have come along way. Try what anti suggested. The good news is the printer is recognized so we know it's just a driver mismatch. I am still performing the steps Anti described.
At installing ghostscript the following error:
Package ghostscript is not available but is referred to by another package. This may mean the package is missing, may been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.
E: Package ghostscript has no installation candidate
I will go on with the last steps.
Thanks for helping!

Yeah, keep at it.
If it seems over your head and you want an explanation, just ask. antiX can be a bit steep to learn at times, but once you get over some of the hurdles, it gets easier.

The first testpage has been printed. Now installed as a Canon i560
With this succes its a good idea to go to sleep myself.
Thank you guys for the support.
And Anti it is not AntiX which has this steep learning curve I think. It is with most distro's for machines I have. I looked at the SliTaz site and there was a printer problem too and .....not solved. So, I will stay with AntiX for the moment __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

Glad you can print Piedie.
Have a good sleep, and once you are rested, have fun with antiX.
Feel free to post.
