I tried to install latex209 package using Synaptic and it failed producing the following error:

I see this same error almost every other day. Debian seems to have frequent"temporary failure" issues.

What you do is try again tomorrow, and chances are that it will work just fine.

Thank you. I never faced this kind of problems when using Ubuntu packages. Too bad for Debian (and hard to understand what is the reason behind it).

Maybe one can add other repositories/mirrors?

I just tried to install kaffe and I got:
W: Failed to fetch

Well, yea, but Ubuntu is secretly underwritten by Bill Gates and he uses it as a tax write-off.

Ok, I made that up, but you must admit that Ubuntu ships w/out the Windows codecs, so maybe, just maybe ... __{{emoticon}}__

Anyway, 99% chance that what you are looking for will be available tomorrow.

On who's account? For money is what keeps those servers up ...

I see. Excuse my naivity.

So, the message is that Ubuntu repositories are better off than those of Debian or Mepis?

Well, today's attempt to install latex209 lead to another error:
E: latex209-bin: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
The same error appears after installation of ghostview (gv).

kaffe was seemingly installed with all dependencies after two attempts.

Maybe some dependencies didn't get installed.

In a terminal as root, try

apt-get update
apt-get -f install

People usually forget that there is no such thing as a"free service" - that you don't have to pay the bill doesn't mean that there is none to pay ...

In terms of money to burn, definitely (by courtesy of Shutttleworth's checkbook ...) - in all other terms (e.g. quality of content), rather not __{{emoticon}}__

anticapitalista,

I did it what you've suggested. I get in the end:
Setting up latex209-bin (25.mar.1992-10) ...
Make the format file of `latex209'. This may take some time. ...
/usr/share/texmf/web2c/mktexupd: /var/lib/texmf/web2c/latex209.fmt not a file.
dpkg: error processing latex209-bin (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
latex209-bin
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I think the problem is with latex.

See this from debian.
