Hi
I would appreciate any advice to get dvd::rip installed. How do I solve the broken / unmet problems below?
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
transcode: Depends: libavcodec52 (>= 4:0.5.svn20090318) but 3:0.svn20090303-1 is to be installed
Depends: libavformat52 (>= 4:0.5.svn20090318) but 3:0.svn20090303-1 is to be installed
Depends: libpostproc51 (>= 4:0.5.svn20090318) but 3:0.svn20090303-1 is to be installed

Maybe you could use aptitude instead?

Thanks OU812, that worked ............ I think!
That aptitude has one scary interface, in the end I just typed"aptitude install dvdrip" and"y" for the solution. I did not understand what it did. Why a package would exist that depends on something else that does not seem to be available is beyond me at the moment.

It is not that the package is not available, just that the dependencies are 'out-of-sync'.
For example, dvdrip comes from the multimedia repo that Debian does not control (and doesn't want to either)

Hi anti
thanks for clarification, and congratulations on a fine distro. It does everything I want on the machine I use it on. My reason for wanting to play with apps like dvd:rip, lxdvdrip, acidrip, etc, is because I have a more powerful dualcore XP machine that only gets used for DVD9 > DVD5 or XviD > DVD. I would like to replace XP if I can master linux apps to do this. In fact, when the price of dual layer falls, I won't even need DVD9 > DVD5

I use k9copy for dvd rips. It brings in quite a bit of kde, but on my main box I don't mind too much. I have found k9copy to be very reliable.

Hi again
I'll check out k9copy. BTW do I have to continue using aptitude since I used it for dvd:rip, I'm sure I read something about consistently using only one method of package managment?

I don't think it will matter too much to be honest, though there are devs who say to use one and stick to it.
Debian now recommends aptitude.

For DVD ripping Many of the windows apps work very well in wine, DVDdecrypter, DVDFab 4 and 5, DVDShrink and even nero. It's nice to have several of these because if one fails another will probably work through it. K9copy is usually my first choice and has done 99% of what I through at it.
