I knew that the way ahead would be choppy, systemd is insinuating itself into more and more packages. More and more undeclared dependencies.

After installing Core and enabling the Testing repos I did a dist-upgrade and although I could get xorg installed OK, install Xfce4 returned this error:
xfce4-sessions : Depends: libsystemd0 but it is not installable

To get around this I reinstalled Core and deployed xorg/Xfce4 before enabling testing and upgrading. I can enable Testing repos but I'm pretty confident about the results of any future dist-upgrade...

Last night I tried to install my VPN client on my netbook and it simply wouldn't work...so I left it and this afternoon returned to it again with my fresh Core install on the PC. I ditched gdebi amd went straight to the command line so I could see what was going on:
openvpn : Depends: libsystemd0 but it is not installable

Blinkin' systemd.

I don't know if there is something I can do about this? Is there anything you and the guys can or need to do anti? Are we doomed to stand by and watch with frustration and disappointment as Poettering slowly wins? __{{emoticon}}__

I know how you feel!

The only *consolation* is that libsystemd0 on its own doesn't make the init system systemd.
If you are *happy* for it to get installed, you should edit/remove etc/apt/preferences.d/00systemd (just to allow it to get installed) and then still use 00systemd.

How long for? I have no idea.

Sorry anti! I should've been reading around in the forum before posting this question, I saw the MATE desktop thread and I've already done this and install openvpn. I replaced the (two) systemd files(s) and then installed the vpn-unlimited client. Problem resolved...for now. __{{emoticon}}__
