... will that burn up a bunch more resources? I bet it would still outrun most of the LXDE and Xfce distros around (Lubu, Xubu, etc).

And...

Let's say, just for grins, that I only want to run Xfce as my only"default" session. I would want to remove all the other bits and WMs I'm not using. Can that be done safely? How?

If there was an Xfce edition of Mepis around I might have tried that, but AntiX + Xfce makes plenty of sense to me, probably a bunch easier than"pure" Debian + Xfce, am I right? Is there the same"Mepis Magic" in AntiX that makes Mepis so easy to install and use?

Still"emerging" from my Xubuntu addiction, thanks in advance for thoughtful replies.

For removing stuff. Use Synaptic. If you would have went with a core install instead of base or full install

I did a LXDE AntiX 8.5 core Install long ago but it was just practice for me and I was not impressed with LXDE when done vs Fluxbox and Wicd when it came to configuring. fixing bugs, and resources being used. Maybe LXDE is better now than then because PCMANFM sucked big time back then.

All I can say is if ya wanna play and poke and hope for grins. Like me, you are on your own. I never asked for help here when I decided to dance to the devils beat.
I don't mean this in a bad way or anything. Experiments are best done alone and then
shared with the community AFTER ya done figured things out.

We be lean and mean for nothing ya know. Good luck with it.

Heh heh, that's what I'll do. Core install + Xfce I guess. I'll keep notes on my efforts and post here (and my blog) what worked, what failed, what ticked me off and what delighted me. One thing I'm pretty sure of though, the result should be awesome.

Linux is a learning experience, it's usually quicker to try things out for yourself, then ask for help if you can't figure out what you did wrong.
That's how I learned as well, same as rokytnji, happy hacking. __{{emoticon}}__

If I do a core install, does it have Synaptic or is it just CLI? Not that it's a problem, just trying to figure out what to install from there for sound and printer/scanner and whatnot. This'll be fun, when I have time to play. Thanks all

If you would like to know what is installed / what needs to be installed, you would be best to do a
dpkg --list > packages.list
to get a list of the installed packages, then
cat packages.list |less
to read / review the list.

LOL, yup. It's just that I'm a GUI guy, not so much a CLI guy. Always looking for the easy/lazy option.

The computer has an 80 GB drive so it isn't as though I would run out of room for multiple desktops, I just want to be efficient. Perhaps it's easy enough just to keep them all and if one gets slow or troublesome,I could just choose a different session at login.

@Dave, thanks to you as well.

I did this about a week ago because I wanted a small/custom x86 setup on my desktop machine and so far so good.

The core cli installer is straight forward and easy as long as you have your partitions set before you start. Also, there are no"Are you sure you want to do this?" messages so be careful.

After booting into the new system and configuring sudo it was just a matter of

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get install xorg lxde
...
$ startx
To get sound I had to install and configure some combo of alsa and pulseaudio. Then, after a few hours of installing, configuring, googleing, and cursing, I had exactly what I was looking for.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your help! The more I've read about IceWM though, the more tempted I am to leave it alone (a full install) and let SpaceFM manage the desktop. It looks as easy as Xfce has been, only even less of a resource hog on an older 'puter. I like a clean, minimal desktop with no icons and maybe a few launchers in a panel. I think the only thing I'll miss is that nifty weather app in the Xfce panel.

Check out our conky thread. You can put weather in that.

I also really dig spacefm and icewm. I've done some videos you might be interested in. You can check them out at the link in my signature. There are also some links at antix.mepis.org.

Excellent! Bookmarked. Looks like simplicity doesn't HAVE to mean"heaviness" after all!

Umm, if you don't want icons... just icewm, or"anywm" will do, without the spacefm bit.

I really like icewm, even if I have not used it in a while.
