I think I may have found something for the cs42xx sound cards.

Chipsburner's 4-step solution for sound on the IBM 770 worked PERFECTLY for my 600E.

I just set it up 10 minutes ago (simply followed his instructions) so it remains to be seen if any problems develop, but I am happy!

Chipsburner's solution worked until I powered down. Upon reboot I had no sound. Played with it a bit today (alsaconf as root, then reboot) and I had sound, but my pcmcia card modem was no longer recognized. Rebooted to get to the modem and sound no longer worked. If I sort out the details and get both sound & modem working through a power-down I'll post again.

If I boot with pnpbios=off the sound seems to work, but modem does not. If I remove this command from the grub menu.lst the sound fails but the modem works.
How can I have both?
