What would happen if I just uninstalled it? Would I be able to log on?

Yes. You would need to login at the prompt and then run"startx". You may also want to try GDM as a login manager.

Roy,
I'm not too fond of slim either, seeing how I keep breaking somehow (haven't figured out how). I installed gdm in a laptop and it has been very stable, so it's worth a try.

Slim works fine for me, and I've learned how to modify the initially selected window manager, as posted elsewhere in these threads. Works fast and effectively for me; I like it.

You can only have one login manager installed at a time. So uninstall your current login manager before installing another one. I have done this a few times while experimenting with gdm. But I keep coming back to slim for a few reasons:

1. It's very light.
2. I very rarely change wm's or de's.
3. I don't need to change locales.

So slim does exactly what I need it to: give me a gui login and get out of my way.
