How can I make things reside on the desktop?
Thanks.

First I'd suggest deciding what kind of desktop you want. There is a way of getting icons on:

1) Fluxbox

2) IceWM

3) Rox

Everybody here seems to have a preference. Indicate which window manager you're interested in, and whoever is into that one will probably give good advice on getting things onto it.

hmmm, so does this mean there is no desktop at the moment?
I thought it was fluxbox because of the application menu setup.
I googled the 3 and fluxbox seems ok since i'm using an old laptop (reviews stressed upon its 'lightness').

So how does one setup a desktop?

The terminology can get a little confusing, but in a way this is a good thing because it results from your having lots of choices to make antiX work the way you want it to.

So for example, I don't think fluxbox technically has a desktop--at least not in the sense that you can drag and drop icons and files and executables onto it. But there are ways that you can get things on there if you want to stay exclusively with fluxbox.

On the other hand, I've had very good success with the rox desktop, which is called the rox pinboard. I'm not working on my antiX system at the moment, but if I recall you simply right click when you're in fluxbox, move down to WM's (window managers), click to activate choices between iceWM and rox. Clicking on rox gives you the option of the pinboard or the panel. Click on pinboard and boom, you've got the rox desktop (which you can configure any way you like).

There is a lot of detail about setting up different kinds of desktops at the antiX Wiki. If you want to get into fine-tuning your desktop, you should go there and browse on fluxbox, icewm, and rox.

But if you want to just get to the nitty gritty right off, go ahead and launch the rox desktop and drag some executables onto it (if you like opening applications by clicking icons rather than using the command line or the menu system). (Sorry if I'm explaining the obvious; I don't know how much you really need to know.)

So one way would be to just start in with the rox desktop, then as questions arise go to the Wiki or post here.

Edit: If you're looking for the antiX"how to" page, go here and click on"howto articles":

I ended up using ROX as my desktop. The link was really useful and everything went quite smoothly.
One question. The icons i downloaded are 128x128 (quite big), but on the desktop they are smaller. Is there a way I can have them original size?

How do you set a wallpaper image that will display with icons?
I have my icons working, but when I set my custom wallpaper they disappear. On reboot they appear again, but the wallpaper is hidden. I say hidden because if i open a terminal window, you can see the wallpaper in the background of the terminal.
I can't wait to show you guys my desktop!

You will have to manually edit the wallpaper for rox.

Ok, with the rox-pinboard working as you have it set:

1. Drag the wallpaper of choice to the rox desktop
2. Right click on it
3. Click on Backdrop
4. Drag the wallpaper file to the"Drop image here"

The problem is that the fluxbox wallpaper setting doesn't set the wallpaper for the rox-desktop. You have to do thatas described above.

Can't wait to see your desktop, r3bol!!

AntiX vs Xfiles.
I made a connection with AntiX and Xfiles for various reasons. This was done real quick. I might spend more time on it when I get some more time __{{emoticon}}__
BTW the icons are much bigger (128x128), but for some reason there seems to be only one size for ROX icons.

Hope you liked it.

Very nice r3bol __{{emoticon}}__

I like the downloads icon LOL.

I'm sure there is a way to have bigger icons on the desktop, but I'm not quite sure how.

Have you tried messing with, in rox-filer menu

Options>Pinboard>Icons grid step

R3bol... Nice desktop!

I noticed that the writing on your top panel is large, dark, and very easy to read; mine is squint-size, dim, and very hard to read. In fact, I have to use a digital xclock so I can tell the time and date. I've tried messing with the dpi thingy in Xconfig > General but it won't allow any changes (it accepts 96 dpi, nothing else), and I haven't found anything to do with fonts.

How did you do that?

You should be able to change the font size by either editing the theme config or ~/.fluxbox/overlay. Both should contain font size and type lines.

See here for how to do what erie suggests for overlay file

Hi. Unfortunately, anticapitalista, the link you gave me isn't valid. However, I did find the /usr/share/fluxbox/styles/Emerge/theme.cfg file. Using the bsc editor I made all the fonts '12' and now the text is big enough to see, but still a little faint. All the text colors are #000000. Is there a way to make the text bolder or darker?
