Hello all,
Trying out Skype and when checking my sound configuration via the"robot" I have none. I read the mepis instructions and I'm a bit confused.
When opening up my mixer I see that I have HDA NVidia, Reatek ALC888, AlsaMixer v1.0.22. I have a Microphone plugged into a jack in front of my computer. No web cam yet.
Let me know if I need to supply more info. I'm really kind of excited about setting this up and hope that I can get this running. My daughter will be going to college in the fall and it would be great to be using it.
Thanks in advance for any help!!
Dave

Maybe my thread/posts in Harcap forum might be of some use.

I posted at the end on how to do it in Macpup. The modprobe file in AntiX is in etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base,conf
I don't know if my fix will work for you. I did this on a Asus EEE PC 900 running AntiX 8.2 running AlsaMixer v1.0.17.
I had Skype working though in another Distro using AlsaMixer v1.0.22. So I don't think you need to edit etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base,conf file at all. More likely the problem is how you set up alsa mixer and skype.

Thanks. Looks like this may be a bit of a project for me...I'll have to take it slow.
I appreciate your response and will post back if I make any headway.

I went ahead and installed the debian lenny skype package from skypes site. Version 2.1 something. Just to see if I could get it working on my fresh AntiX 8.5rc3 install on my IBM A22m Laptop.
I spent way to much time trying to get the mic working on my IBM A22m with 8.5rc3 installed.
I must be tired. Ibm A22m doesn't come with a internal mic. LOOOOOOOOOOOL. I can be such a space case sometimes. I need one of those plugin mics with the little barrel jack on it for this laptop to test.
Too tired to continue. Will post back later if I find a external mic and get it going. Happy Trails, Rok

Not a problem. I'm trying to use on of those external mics...at least for now. I appreciate your efforts, but as I can see you need to watch your cornea.
Take it easy.

Rok,
I was able to open and use mhWaveEdit. I made some edits. and it sounds good on playback. Maybe a little low. Those dancing dual meters start out pegged and then gradually drift toward the center and then lower. I have a feeling that I still need to fine tune or maybe get rid of the cheapo mic. We'll see. When I test on Skype, my voice is scratchy and improves as the test goes on. Is this normal?
I enjoy the problem solving aspect of this. I keep changing between OSS and Alsa drivers. Not really too sure which one seems to work best. I keep mixing settings looking for the right combo, but not really being methodical about it. Willy Nilly, I would say. Getting kind of bleary eyed now though.
Any other suggestions by you or anyone else would be great.
Thanks Rok I appreciate your help. Take care of the eyes man.

Well, I ordered a mic on ebay from Hong Kong for a $1.30. Trouble is it is gonna take forever to arrive. So it will be a long wait till I can delve into the Skype thing and Alsa on this iBM A22m. You will probably have it figured by the time I get the mic
Adjust your alsamixer settings little by little and the scratchiness will go away. When I set up my little netbooks the speaker would howl/scream till I figured out little by little how to adjust the sliders for alsa mixer. That was why I posted my alsa Mixer settings in Hardkap.my voice is scratchy and improves as the test goes on. Is this normal?

Rok,
Yeah, I believe that I figured it out. The key was mhWaveEdit and your directions on how to set it up. I found that Alsa seemed to work best. Clipping is a minor problem. I have been waiting a bit and letting it drop from HEAVY to LOW. I don't know yet how to adjust it manually. I will continue to"play with it" and if the budget allows get one of the reommended webcams. I think I will eventually set Skype on Mepis 8.5
Thanks again and I will mark this solved.
