antix 8.5 full seems that runs fine on my p3 866 128 mb ram
but i was thinking of trying some things in order to use less ram and boot even faster(it IS fast!).
maybe to make it more personal...

to do this i thought that i should watch in htop which services are running and then decide what i could delete or just stop. i know some of these services but most of them i don't, which i can surely google, the thing is that i'm not sure if they are depended to others because if they are, i'm afraid that i'll crash the system... am i right?

another thing i'd like to understand better is about the updates...
the last stable release of antix keeps let's say around 40mb of ram.
would it keep the same amount of ram after one year of suggested updates only?
in case i'm fine with this release as it is, do i need to update anything?
this box would be mainly for dos games, music/videos and some web-surfing.

You could also consider installing antix-core which is a VERY minimal version and then you add the applications you want.

well... of course but what i had in mind was to be able to choose if i want to disable or enable certain services-apps in startup so as to free some more ram because generally i'm fine with antix full!

(i noticed that conky shows 121mb of ram instead of 128mb! is this a bug or something?)

have a look at this list made by sergio with start-up applications to get an idea at what to disable. antix-8-5-full-startup-services-t2299.html

That file should also be in the Documents folder.

If you don't use wicd to connect to the internet, you can remove it. That on its own will save some RAM.

Have you applied these bug fixes to antiX-M8.5?

1. Remove the goggles repo.

2. Comment out halevt & in both /home/username/.fluxbox/startup and /home/username/.icewm/startup files.

very useful list! thanks!

i got a bit confused though because in the"startup services" there are 6-7 columns for each service!

i have just commented out the"halevt &"
but i cant find the"goggles" repository... i search for it in synaptic>repositories.

seems that by changing the default color depth in xorg.conf from 24 to 16 my system is quite faster!
of course i'm not sure if this could cause any problems apart of the fewer color levels.

in startup services there was the"transmiss" enabled! i suppose it's for the transmission applet.
why is this in startup? isn't getting loaded whenever i open transmission?

what is"stop-boot","bootlogs","rc.local" and"rmnologin"? they are not mentioned in the above list... can i disable them?

i'm not sure if i should disable also the"rsyslog","slim" and"usplash"..
i always auto-login in icewm so i'm not sure if slim is needed.

Of the list you mention, only disable rmnologin and transmission.

Dillo is ok if you don't use flash and just want to search the web.

You could remove the extras you don't need in iceape, but I don't think it will reduce the RAM usage by much, if any.

how could i remove the extras? i suppose it will be easy to restore them back in!?

the only thing dillo couldn't do (or i didnt know how to) was to download an archive after the code number-box. i guess this is something like flash or something..

i also cant copy/paste! that was helpful!
