I know that I must be doing the wrong thing because I can not get the volume any higher!! Is there a procedure that I must follow? Thanks!!

The usual ways are via Control Centre > Hardware or alsamixer in a terminal. __{{emoticon}}__

I used the control center to increase the volume! It took me a while to figure out that the mouse was useless in the volume control. You have to use the up and down arrows on the keyboard to raise or lower the volume. You have to use the right and left arrows to change columns!!
