hi, I did not see anywhere where I could post help questions, so I am putting it here, if this is the wrong place, please forgive me

I am kinda new to linux configuration.

my questions.

I am using antiX as a vm appliance I downloaded to use with my vmplayer.

I need to use static dns for my setup, when using the gui network tool it keeps reverting to 192.168.xx.xx when I apply it. I also need to use a static gateway but dhcp IP address. a few other distors allow me to do this but I really like the look and feel of antiX

IE

dns 10.113.xx.xx
gateway needs to be my windows box ip that the vmplayer sits on

I tried to edit the files but I dont see an editor I am used to

what do I use for a cli editor? I dont see vi, vim,emacs

I am terribly sorry if I am asking silly questions that seem obvious to others

Firstly welcome to antiX Dr dark matter.

Secondly, I moved the post to antiX-Lysistrata ( I guess that is the one you are using)

Thirdly, to the problem.

You should be able to set static via the gui tool Network. You have to click Apply after EACH change for it to stick.

If that doesn't work and you need to edit by hand, antiX comes with nano (I thought I had vi there too, but anyway)

I don't know much about static set up, but I'm sure someone can help. Or post on MepisLovers forum. It gets a lot of traffic, they are very helpful and of course antiX is Mepis' little sister!

thanks very much, I have not used nano before but I just used it to edit the /etc/hosts file to get around the DNS issue, interesting editor LOL __{{emoticon}}__

So is the net working ok for you?

Nano is a pico clone. Light and does the job. Sure not as advanced as vi(m)/emacs, but good enough for most people's needs.

Are you sure vi isn't installed? Which version of antiX are you using?

I edited the hosts file and put in the names of the servers I needed to get on, so yes.................IP is working, just not DNS, I think I can get around this or fix it after having a play.

antiX Spartacus is the older version using the Ubuntu Dapper repos. The newest release is antiX Lysistrata and it uses the Debian Etch and Debian testing repos (as well as Mepis ones of course).

Spartacus works with k5/k6 unlike Lysistrata (yet).
Spartacus will not be developed further as I followed Mepis in going (back) to Debian.

I don't know if there is one or not. I haven't produced one.
I actually prefer using VirtualBox to vmplayer as you can boot from the iso file.

VirtualBox works great in both Windows XP & Linux. How intensive? I do not know, buts its free __{{emoticon}}__
