I'm Farmer Mike, from Colorado. I've been using Linux for almost 4 years now, I switched because I didn't like what I'd been hearing about Windows Vista. I like to try different distros to see how they worked and looked, and one of the better ones was Simply Mepis. When antiX came out, I was interested and tried it. Since I like to buy old computers second hand and fix them up, a lightweight but full featured distro appealed to me. I have put together one system for our youngest son and his girlfriend with antiX 8.2, and am playing with this distro myself. I'm very impressed with it.

Welcome, Farmer Mike! You sure picked a good distro to try out - two of them, for that matter. For a stable, moderate weight easy desktop, SimplyMEPIS is hard to beat. For an only slightly more volatile, but lighter and flexible system to experiment with and run on a wide variety of hardware, antiX is awesome.

I have a third favorite, also Debian based. It is sidux. As far as the default kernel, it is one of the best running kernels I've seen on my hardware. The forums for that distro are terrrible, but the software is super. As it turns out, antiX takes some of the best features from sidux, including a few that sidux strangely dumped, some of the best from SimplyMEPIS, and a smattering of the best from a number of other lightweight distributions. antiX does the software reuse concept as well as any distro out there - it uses the best features from each of the finest distributions and gives credit where credit is due. Hope your experiences with antiX continue to be good. This forum is friendly and helpful; hope you hang out here from time to time.

Greetings Farmer Mike.

I know what you mean about getting life out of older computers. I don't think I've built a new system in 6 years or so. Did get a netbook, which antix runs great on.
