no, it is not in core.
did you run"apt-get update" before trying to install the kernel?
are you on the stable repo? I am not sure what kernels are in which repos....

apt get-update worked very well.

It allowed the apt-get install command for the new kernel and headers to work correctly, and it downloaded and installed. I updated grub, and selected the new kernel through advanced options on reboot. It starts to fire up the kernel then hangs part way through, the first time it had some sort of recursive error which requested a reboot, the second attempt it just hung up a few lines in

But we've made good progress, maybe I'll try one of the alternate Kernels suggested.

Update:

Significant progress.

The second Kernel I installed (the 3.16 586 Debian Kernel) loaded correctly. After updating grub, I booted the machine, fired up the audio driver, changed the settings on the mixer, and was able to get sound through the laptop speakers.

I made the change persistent and tweaked the settings so it auto-plays CDs from the drive.

Minor Issues remaining:

1) I still cannot get any audio output from the laptop headphone socket at all, there is no headphone option visible in the mixer that I can see to tweak volume, and even with the headphones plugged in it continues at full volume through the speakers.

2) After antiX shuts down the laptop does not power off correctly, it has to be manually powered down. (This may be normal I don't know?).

Thanks to everyone for helping me get this far. I have a 4 port USB PCMCIA card arriving later this week.

A further update:

I picked up the NEC chipset PCMCIA 4 Port USB card recommended earlier in the thread. During the boot process it kicks out some errors:

16.965913] usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the usb cable is bad?
18.158069] usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the usb cable is bad?
19.349885] usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the usb cable is bad?
20.541843] usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the usb cable is bad?
20.542063] usb usb4-port1: unable to enumerate USB device

Are these 'normal' or is it something that needs to be resolved?

It does seem to recognise the ports once booted, whether the devices were plugged in prior to boot, or plugged in once booted.. I have a mouse plugged in, and a USB memory stick right now.

Boy, it doesn't like the wifi adapterI tried to plug the Netgear WG111v2 Wireless G into the new USB , and it instantly sucked the life out of the machine, the screen goes black, and the fan starts going like mad, so that looks like too much of a power draw through the pcmcia. So the netgear is back on the old USB 1.1 port again.

I'd still like to take advantage of the better bandwidth on the USB 2 ports, Can anyone recommend a decent low power Wireless N - USB dongle/adapter that plays well with Linux? Also if anyone has any recommendations for a low power blue-tooth usb dongle I'd be interested to hear them.

Thanks

Richard
