I got Test 1 working on a Dell Latitude D600, but that thing works with nearly anything. Today, I got Test 2 going with a Gateway 17" PA6A laptop. which has a high res monitor and a Broadcom wireless card. While I have not attempted to run the video in anything other than VESA mode yet, that is fine, because my eyesight is crummy anyway and I tend to run at lower res or use giant fonts or both! The 4300 series wireless works on the Gateway, and the D600 has the Intel Pro Wireless, which has long worked well with antiX.

Later on I will try out more features, but suffice it to say that I can already use this distro, load it into RAM and use it as a fast running, mostly Web browsing system. I have been using the Ajax chat forum above the message window and that works very well.

Nice, fast distro with a nice appearance. Great job already! I will nit pick later, but right now, I am just enjoying it. Anti, great job, and thanks to everyone who helped Anti with all of the pieces.

More praise!

Test 2 recognized by intel pro wireless card (4965 AG/AGN) ootb using wicd (Toshiba Satellite PSAG0U-03K00L). I think it's because of the newer kernel.

BTW The new"Manage Hardware" button in control center > hardware is really sweet to use. It made tracking this info a breeze. Thanks erie for the tip!

Also, my wireless usb mouse was recognized as well.

I can't wait for the final release so I can install it on my laptop and finally have a laptop working again. Ahh.

Finally downloaded M8 and ran it in VB. It looks fantastic, 2 thumbs up for the artists. I have not really run through it yet but it runs great in VB.

Now installing.

Thanks for the praise.

Remember this is a test release, not even available to the general public (ie it hasn't been announced outside friends of antiX), so try all the features and try to break antiX.

I really would like feedback from the meta-installer. Try the lot if you have a fast internet connection.

Have tried the beta 2, just awesome, minor glitch with wicd, have not figured out why it will not connect, maybe because of only using on the live cd, but could connect with manage network interfaces, also I tried the metainstaller, on live cd and installed the hp printing, worked flawlessly. Testing on my dell 700m, will try it out on an older dell, then give my desktop a whirl too when I have some spare time. Really looking good so far!! Great job anticapitalista

cheers

Wow, nice job anti and team. Once again, I was not an IceWM fan until 7.5 and in 8 the themes/default look are just as good if not better. Will continue testing and report any issues I encounter. Great job!!

jaws - then you should play around with the gtk2 themes and icon sets. we've included some nice, complementary themes to go with the window dressings and wallpapers. In fact, impuwat and i are working on some even swisher themes than on the current iso.

I installed M8 test 1 on a Dell Latitude PIII today.
All I can say is,"Wow!" It looks wonderful, and there are so many new goodies, I don't even know where to start looking. __{{emoticon}}__
--------------
Anyway here are my notes:
Before install:
1. Found printers and connected through my mepis desktop, but lost them before it printed; maybe due to trying"Print Test Page" because it never works for me on antiX with my hp printers.
2. wired internet worked fine
3. Ceni found wireless and appeared to be ready to connect; I don't have a wireless connection at home; it just found the neighbors'. wicd took too long and so stopped it. I didn't find rutilt until after the install and haven't tried it yet. The wireless card is Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series PC Card

After install:
1. How do people know that the root password is"root" since there is no login on the live cd to give instructions?
2. Will erie's zenscreen be included? When I tried the screenshot from the icewm menu, it seemed to be something else - scrot?
3. I used the meta-package installer to add the hp printer packages; it was so easy! Thanks for including it.
Printer setup was not as straight forward as package install; my full post is on ML:

The meta-package installer seemed to work really well. I'll try open office and maybe kde_lite too, but I can only play a bit at a time now.
4. Could the meta-package installer be put on the system tab of the control center like synaptic? I knew about inxi from the forum. Do we have a list of these goodies in the help files? I'll explore it all myself soon, but just asking.
5. I really appreciate having the files /etc/fstab, menu.lst, etc. all in one place too.

Well, I'll post back again when I play more. __{{emoticon}}__

It is beautiful - that's it. I am using a Dell Inspiron 8000 (128 MB RAM, ). And I like the subtle changes (for instance Ctrl-Alt-arrow moves to the next window ... nice). I also like the cpu monitor in the panel - more stuff like that.

However, when dragging a iceweasel-shortcut to the desktop, it does not open iceweasel when clicked (it opens the usr/share/iceweasel directory instead). Is that intentional, and how should I drag a shortcut to the desktop?

You can also do:

1. win + number = to go that desktop number
2. win + space = run command
3. left win = programs menu
4. right win = window list
5. alt + tab = window chooser

For icons on the desktop, I suggest looking at the idesk links in iceweasel (under OU812's bookmarks).

Thanks for those shortcuts. I looked into idesk. When I run aptitude search idesk (I found out about aptitude from some article I read when googling) it says, that idesk is installed (if I understand the"i" correctly). Yet, I do not find a /usr/share/doc/idesk directory, which I find a bit confusing, since the link you referred me to says:

Before you can run IDesk, you need an .ideskrc file in your home directory - you'll find a sample that you can copy and paste in the /usr/share/doc/idesk/README file

Why is that? I should probably tell you, that I am new with linux: originally, I just wanted to set up a laptop for my children, but I like Linux (or at least antiX) better and better.

Also, I am puzzled, that my buttons for the soundpressure are not functioning - should I enable something (light and contrast works perfect, though). And I would really like a battery indicator. Also, I wonder if my graphics card is set up correctly, since even a youtube video seems to be pushing it to its limits .....

Anyways, right now I would like to play a bit with this idesk.

Well, I took the plunge as I faled again to upgrade my M7.5 to 2.6.27 kernel without breaking my wireless. First impressions are very good, not least because I now have a new kernel AND wireless! __{{emoticon}}__

Danish,

Tonight I will create a post - either here or in the 'tips and tricks' forum - for using idesk. I'll be sure to start with an example for iceweasel.
