Hello! I have very recently installed the antiX base .iso on my old PC to give it new life and I am very much a Linux newbie. I have recently done the ten-week Open University T155 Linux introductory course; friends on the course forum guided me towards choosing a suitable distro. Please may I ask a couple of opening questions?

(1) Have I installed the right version? Should I have installed the full version and is my PC (AMD K6-2 450 MHz, 128 Mb RAM, ATi Rage 128Pro 32 Mb graphics card) capable of running the full version? If it is, how do I uninstall the base version and install the full version? Do I need access to GRUB and, if so, how? (During my trial-and-error efforts I installed Xubuntu 6 but folk at LinuxQuestions.org advised removing it in favour of antiX as Xubuntu 6 is unsupported (and Xubuntu 7, 8 or 10 wouldn't install). I removed experiments/errors by booting from my Partition Magic floppies and deleting and recreating the partitions but that no longer works; trying to boot from DR-DOS Partition Magic floppies now gives a boot error and then antiX loads. antiX installed GRUB, and I have thus lost control.)

(2) Is there an antiX user manual or 'idiot's guide' that one can download? (I have"Linux_newbie_Guide.pdf" but is there a guide specifically for antiX?)

Welcome to antiX, PeterB.

1. antiX-base is minimal, but light. You get to build up from what there is ie you should choose which applications you want/need. Not easy for a new user, but it will keep your system light and you will learn a lot.

The full version has a lot more applications, but it is 'heavier' though. It should work fine on your box, make sure you get the 486 version not the 686 one.

2. There is a FAQ in the /home/username/Documents folder or online here:

url was:"http://sblinux.org/antix/index.html"

There is a newer version in beta stage (though it is a beta, it is very stable). A new .iso will be uploaded before the New Year.

Thanks for your answer and your help; I need to pause for a breather before progressing this thread...

(For info, on LinuxQuestions.org I am PBPBPB (PeterB was already taken), where you have helped me previously)

Yours,

Peter
