I got my p1-mmx (233mhz) working pure antix-debian but is a bit slow for antix.
Ubuntu has a GTK1.2 Remix so i might try that with antix.
I did not find the switch(1) on the gtk-theme-switch.
do i need to download anything to get the old gtk 1.2 to work?
on the side note : the laptop works good --low ram use.
just have problems with missing acpi kernel drivers for the cpu,fan and battery.
Ihope if i reload the kernel it will find them because i downloaded the kernel with a different laptop.
Is it safe to remove the old mepis kernel?

I had a P1 233 and could not get antix to load. Spartacus would install but that's it.
Did you start with Debian and then antixize it?
As far as the acpi stuff, you may need to build your own kernel and even that's just a maybe,

It is safe to remove the old MEPIS kernel if the Debian one is working ok.
About gtk1 apps, you might have problems running them, for example some people have had problems running xmms. It works, but gives an error message and you have to use export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 && xmms to get it to work.
But this is only for some users.
xmms runs fine on my antiX-base (7.01) sid install

well i fix the kernel problems but play with it more and broke wifi!
i'll try again in two weeks and this time i'll try using the smxi to install the kernel.
Broke the wifi after i used smxi to remove the old kernel and some cleaning. oops!!
thats ok because i used the full antix and next time i'll use the base install.
It used about half of 3 gigs of hard drive --not too bad
****************************************
acpi is not used but apm is.
how can conky find the battery and temp info?
i like to keep an eye on the fan to make sure it even works.
I only paid $4 on this one.

I think apm only works in conky for Freebsd, but you should be able to monitor temps using i2c.

I was allways told that the older the computer you should use the stable?
Is it safe to use sid on the old junker?
I'll use the real lite apps and say with gtk2.
The smxi script is really great--just started to use it --felt brave today.
Do the base install have smxi in it -- if not it should be!
Thank you guys for the help
I'll really like this old thing the battery lasted three hours!!!
It only last one hour with my other laptop.

smxi is on the base iso.
Using sid/unstable should be ok, but you have to check that the system doesn't get borked.
Some users have decided to install antiX and keep to the stable repo only, for maximum safety.
It is up to you really.

thank you very much.
I found the missing files on the other laptop and thumb drive them over.
i'm looking over the info you pointed to.
I'm very happy with this slow 233mhz laptop running debian-antix.
I'll post some screenshots after i fin. with an oroborus theme i'm working on for small screens.
