Hi all
I installed a dual boot with win xp with antix from USB,but in the last step i unchecked the grub install ,and i ended up with a laptop that doesnt boot
I get a prompt:
error:file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not foiund
``` grub rescue >
I followed instructions i found on line and using ls
> ls (hd0,3)/ #and i get the rersponse
./ ../ lost+found/ home/ opt/ dev/ proc/ sys/ run/ bin/ boot/ etc/ lib/ media/ mnt/ root/ sbin/ usr/ var/ tmp/
EDIT:
I was able to reach the normal grub prompt after doing
>set prefix=(hdX,Y)/<path to modules>
insmod linux
insmod loopback
insmod iso9660
insmod ntfs
I got GRUB version 2.02 beta2-22+deb8u1
>grub
So where do i go from here??:)
Can anyone help with the next steps,taking into account that this VAIO doesnt have boot option for anything but the HDD,(not USB option available in BIOS .Until now i had grub installed properly ,and was able to boot both win and antix,but i decided to reinstall antix ,and did the stupid thing to not reinstall grub at the end!!)
So where do i go from here?Do i need to throw the drive away or not just yet??:):)(joke,i know i can reboot it somehow.only dont know how!!!):)
Can you re-reinstall antiX and this time leave checkmarked the grub install option...
Hello again
I finally managed to boot in USB antix ,after reinstalling grub from command line ,
and run again installation as you suggested without ticking off the grub option,and everything is back in place,up and running as normal.
I managed not to lose anything from the other partitions,and windows boots OK too!!!
!!!
PS:At 56 ,if i manage to do this stuff,i should be considered at least 10 years younger,right??:):)
Thanks for the support,(well,the moral one:):))
Congratulations on the rescue.
For anybody else without a bootloader and still able to boot from usb see the Supergrub2. This can boot any kernel on a disk even without a bootloader.
