Perhaps some extra step was put into Antix 13.1 that was not in Antix 12 to get the dialer to connect the Internet.
It dials out but disconnects as soon as contact is made. Has anyone else had this problem??

Not sure if you are seeing the same problem, but when I was using a cellular stick it would connect and disconnect because usbmodeswitch was not installed / configured.

It was fixed in version 11 and 12, but since then I've not been able to test as I no longer have the stick.

Thanks Dave!! I could not locate the usbmodeswitch; could you please tell me how to locate it??
I went into the GPRS/UMTS network connection and detected my modem and put it my user name and password as this is the direct route to the etc-wvdial.conf
The connection still failed in a couple of seconds, but not immediately as it had been doing. This is very frustrating!!

Apt-get install usbmodeswitch should tell you if it is installed or not and if is not then it will install it for you

Roky had me use apt-cache policy usb-modeswitch and the large file was there but I did not see what you mentioned. I re-installed Antix 13.1 and configured the GPRS-UMTS to detect my serial modem and I put in my user name and password to my ISP so it would be seen by wvdial. conf. . I then configured the Gnome PPP but as usual I was not granted access to the Internet. I am of the belief that Antix 13.1 is either not relaying my account information upon connecting or the" waiting for prompt" , which I should not need, is not functioning!!

I've taken all I can of this frustration and ordered 4 distros from OSDisc, Crunchbang 11, LXLE 12.04.3, Debian Live 6.0.7 Gnome, and Vectorlinux 7.0 soho. Hopefully I will be able to use one of them while waiting for Antix to look into this dial up situation. I was really looking forward to using Antix 13.1 only to have my enthusiasm sadly crushed!!

I haven't given up yet, but I only have one computer that still has a modem. I used to be able to swing AT commands with the best of them, but now all the arcane knowledge has fled my enfeebled mind. Once I confirm my modem is actually working I'll get back to the gnome-ppp. Incidentally I've also tried the command-line ppp clients and I'm still getting no-dialtone. At least your modem is dialing.

More later.

Antix 13.1 did not detect the internal modem within my computer ( yes, I even tried to get on the Internet that way ) But it immediately detected my Zoom external serial modem. Roky may be right in that no one else uses Antix with dial up!! I sure wish that the developers had left the Gnome PPP from Antix 12 alone and put it into Antix 13.1. Perhaps I'll never get to use Antix 13.1 at all!!

Gnome ppp cuz is not maintained by us the team but is a Debian thing. If ya got a beef. It is with Debian.

So Logic tells me that you need to uninstall the one that Debian Wheezy (I am guessing that is the repos you are using, not testing) and install the Debian Squeeze one that came in AntiX 12.

Edit: Also. You coulda posted what apt-cache policy and a inxi -r readout , so members could see what version of gnome ppp you are running and what repos you are running.

You are letting your famous temper throw the wrenches across the shop and phoning in shotgun orders instead of calming down and thinking this thing through. I am saying this grinning and as a long time buddy/bro to ya. Not yelling or criticizing. I know you well enough to know how your temper can rule you at times. __{{emoticon}}__

Also. If all the distros you ordered are current. They should have the same version of gnome ppp that AntiX with Debian Wheezy has or newer. So I will be curious if they do work on what
the version is.

You know. The

I rebooted in Antix 13.1 and got a bunch of error notifications starting with usb 1-4 device not accepting ad....4 error 110 before booting so I deleted the partition and re-installed Antix 13.1 and still got the error messages. apt-cache policy usb-modeswitch informed the file was in /var-lib-dpkg-status the status file is 29130 lines long. The old status file is 29143 lines long. I'll go back for the inxi -r readout.

Maybe your computer is experiencing hardware problems from age.

Just guessing.

the inxi -r file has a lot of slashes and can not be posted here so I will email it to you.

Looks like you are running gnome ppp 0.3.23-1.2 which is also used in testing and unstable.

Try using gnome ppp 0.3.23-1 instead since you say it worked in AntiX 12.

Just uninstall the one in 13 and install the one I provided in the link above instead.
It will complain that a newer version is in your package manager but ignore it.
Gdebi is usually good for this. Then I would lock it in synaptic so it does not upgrade.

I tested your" old machine" theory by deleting the Antix 13 partition and installing Antix 12. The Internet connection only lasts briefly instead of immediately disconnecting. As usual the connection works just fine in my other operating system. I don't know just what is going on!!

Modem might be heating up AND going bad INSIDE your computer maybe.
Flying blind though on this guess though. I guess we'll wait and see when osdisc
sends you those cds and you can test.

Crap, I am sleepy bro. I missed your working fine in PCLOS.
