Edit>preferences>Video Output> I have mine set on x11
Audio output have set on Alsa.
On the toolbar where it says mplayer. I have it pointed to /usr/bin/mplayer where it says mplayer executable.
Try that out.

You might need to install libdvdcss2 first. In the meta-installer, tick on - non-free -codecs
Then try GNOME mplayer again.

I did manage to get mplayer to play the video but before that i went to Main menu =>Applications => System Tools => metapackage-installer and i then installed Video_codecs and libdvdcss2. MPlayer played the dvd from beginning to end although i couldn't get it to display full screen. Big thanks once again for all the help.
