This might help others diagnose a sound problem.
Playing a soundless DVD in gmplayer (old home movies) somehow muted the sound and then disabled sound system-wide. I couldn't diagnose why I'd lost sound until backtracking my actions led back to gmplayer. Unmuting sound in gmplayer restored sound throughout the system when I'd exhausted all other options.
I'm not sure why this happened or if it's a known issue. Couldn't find any posts on it. Does everyone but me know that muted sound in gmplayer disables sound when all other interfaces (volume control, mixer controls, flash controls online) show sound working fine? If not, maybe it's something to look at in the next antiX release.
Meanwhile, anyone with undiagnosed sound problems: Check the mute button in gmplayer!

same issue here, mplayer mutes the volume in pcm. the solution is either press again m in mplayer or in alsamixer press m on the appropriated mixer. see my screenshot. the volume for pcm is at 50%, but the sound is muted because of the MM under the mixer.

Thanks for the reminder on MM. I missed it under speakers since master was unmuted.
