Not so much a tip or trick but I been playing with this file manager and I like it. It's very similar to MC. The overall appearance is pretty spartan but it gets the job done and it's pretty light. I don't think it has anything to do with Gentoo Linux.
Go ahead try it out.

I tried it in the past and it has a lot going for it once you get over the 'overdose' of choices.
I still think that mc has more to offer though.

The main feature is being able to work without X if you need/prefer to edit files from there. It can also be used as a ftp client. You can 'open' tarballs without actually untarring them.
