This may seem silly but how about"howto wallpaper" for fluxbox? I like fluxbox but I think it is initially takes some getting used to especially if you don't know that a right mouse click gives you the main menu. I use the man page for fluxbox as reference and it occurred to me that having a default wallpaper for fluxbox that was an abreviated man page or a short command list of 10 or 20 useful keyboard shortcuts like
"ALT+Tab / ALT+Shift+Tab= Cycle through windows" would be helpful. If it was the default wallpaper new users would see it immediately and the wallpaper could be easily changed to something else once you have the keyboard short cuts are memorized or left in place as a readily available reference.

One approach would be to make a perfectly transparent borderless terminal window that contains the instructions. I'm not certain that can be done in fluxbox but I use the technique frequently in Enlightenment e16. The urxvt terminal program can provide completely transparent backgrounds but I don't know how easy it is for fluxbox to give you borderless windows that stay below most other windows.

- I would like to see a new metapackage installer option: MATE desktop environment.
At the moment a lot of people is leaving Ubuntu because of Unity and increasing amount of bugs. Mate is the a good old gnome2 DE. We could have some new users with it.
At the moment, if I install 'mate-core mate-desktop-environment lightdm', then lightdm starts but doesn't appear on the screen. After installing xfce(full) with metapackage-installer it does show up. I've installed lightdm, because slim has to be manually configured to handle Mate, Xfce or Lxde. It would be nice to know, how to install Mate without Xfce. Easiest way for users is to have a metapackage option for it.

- Slim vs. Lightdm: Slim doesn't care to autodetect avalaible items like lxde/xfce/Mate, but has numlock ON option. Lightdm needs numlockx preinstalled to handle numlock, and autologin_timeout doesn't work propely (Lightdm doesn't show up if autologin is set), but autodetect works.
Personally, I would prefer Lightdm with some bugfixes for lxde/xfce/mate, and slim for systems without a full DE.

We can probably make slim auto-detect MATE.

So for MATE we only need mate-core and mate-desktop-environment ?

After allowing Mate repos for debian testing and accepting key, we only need mate-core and mate-desktop-environment. These packages will pull in the whole Mate DE as dependencies.

The only problem is that it doesn't contain a DM, so either we need to configure slim or add lightdm the same way as in case Xfce(full) metapackage.

Probably because Xfce(full) pulls in the recommends that are not pulled in when simply onstalling lightdm.

BTW I think next antiX will be able to use SLiM and MATE. I just tested it and got antiX to boot into MATE desktop using SLiM.

I'll make sure MATE is an option in the install-meta package.

Who knows... maybe one can get some hints from"relatives" (both based on Debian) Swift Linux and CrunchBang... For instance, Thunar is a nice file manager

Whatever you'll decide, PLEASE keep it minimal and VERY light

antiX-full will always fit on a cd and will be our 'fattest' flavour with icewm, jwm, fluxbox plus a couple of tiling windows managers. Aim is to keep RAM usage down to a minimal. Latest version, with veas boots into around 70MB RAM running live.

antiX will never come shipped with a desktop environment whether it be the heavies such as KDE, Gnome, the middleweights such as MATE, XFCE or the lightweights such as e17, lxde. It is not our philosophy. However, we make it as easy as possible for users that want to install via the meta-installer app.

Looks to me like a community respin is going to be the best option moving forward for those that want the heavier and fuller DE's.

I have also played with the idea of a MantiX (Mate +AntiX) respin. But, basically we don't need a respin, if there is a metapackage option to install the preferred DE. It's just a few clicks away. The content of the install CD also used to be outdated, so after installing any DE from CD the next step would be the downloading of the latest version. So it's more efficient to have a minimal install CD, and install the DE online. Most of the users have internet access.
And, moreover, it would be impolite to force every user to download a bloated live DVD with several DE, that they will never use.

I installed Mate way back when when it was buggy as hell when it first came out

We tried that when nouveau first went stable (or into testing). The result was that many (older) systems that use nvidia cards were unusable unless people changed the default in the bootloader. Our testers who use nvidia were in a uproar. We provide the nouveau driver but we made nv the default because we target older hardware and not booting (not having vconsoles or X) is far worse than not having the best video possible but nouveau is available for those who want it. In fact, in our next version you will be able to select the nouveau driver from a bootloader menu. I don't know of any surefire hardware detection that will tell us if nouveau is going to screw up. The problem seems to be it defaults to the highest resolution the card supports regardless of what the monitor can handle. Nouveau was not aiming for older hardware but that is the specific aim of antiX. Is having nv the default really so onerous?

Actually, the latest Qupzilla loses badly against iceweasel 19.0: (same four tab opened at the same time)

So I vote on adding the experimental version of iceweasel as a meta package installer option.

I have an unsupported videocard in an outdated box connected to a non-standard-compliant monitor( EDID values are not propely implemented), and it took me a few weeks to have full resolution and openGL support. Please, don't mess up things when they are working.
