I used Fluxbox in the older anti-X (8 and 8.5) releases ... I'm not so familiar with Flux but I muddle through.

I love that the new anti-X M11 defaults into IceWM ... fast and easy.
The IceWM is better for my needs and is more familiar to me; as it more resembles the Xfce desktop ... right-click menu and all.

I just downloaded the anti-X M11-base release . . . which boots into a new Fluxbox WM.
All I can say about Fluxbox in the anti-X M11-'base' is ... WOW!!

The anti-X Devs have out-done themselves in the development, design, layout and implementation of Fluxbox in anti-X. This is a fun and easy to use Flux/anti-X distro.

I would normally install Xfce, but I am going to spend a lot of time playing with and customizing this version of Fluxbox and anti-X.

dolphin_oracle:

can you please tell me how to set the"windows" key to bring up the menu in flux? I just don't know how to refer to the windows key in the"keys" file.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I'm gonna try lxpanel and let you know how I like it.

Mod4 :RootMenu didn't seem to work.

I went to Control Center -> Edit fluxbox settings.

Then in keys file, I commented out all lines starting with Mod 4, then added the line
Mod4 :RootMenu

Then I rebooted. Windows key does nothing.

Man, I feel like I'm being a pest. Here's another question.

In IceWM, can I have two toolbars? One along the bottom and one along the top. I'd like to set it up gnome-style, with menus and launchers along top, and workspaces and minimized windows along the bottom. This doesn't seem possible to me, since I don't see how you'd specify WHERE minimized windows should go. But I thought I'd ask for the heck of it.

OK, I went back and looked at my keys file instead of relying memory. Here's the line I use for the root menu.

Code: Select all

Super_L :RootMenu
This will allow a single keystroke of the"windows" key to pull up the root menu.

My best guess. I played with ~/.icewm/preferences and moved my toolbar to the top. Did not like it on this little netbook because it hid the close/minimize buttons on any open window.

You will probably have to make another ~/.icewm/toolbar text file also. Toolbar behavior
looks to be set in ~/.icewm/preferences though. If you break it. Welcome to the club. __{{emoticon}}__

Big Edit: I strongly urge you to make a backup of ~/icewm/preferences before editing the original so you have a backup file to restore in case you break something in preferences and forget what you have changed. Happy Hacking.

Thread Update:

I have been using the antiX M11 version with Fluxbox for about 6 weeks, now. __{{emoticon}}__

Fluxbox is a very well documented and supported Window Manager.
I have learned a lot about Fluxbox and how it works.
Fluxbox has replaced Xfce as my primary desktop. __{{emoticon}}__

I have found Fluxbox to be easier to use and configure than Openbox, with many additional features.
