In Windows and in many programs, the F2 button is a keyboard shortcut for renaming. It would be nice if that was also the case for antiX. I just love standardised keyboard shortcuts! They're so hot right now!

its not really"standard" anywhere except windows.

its not f2 on mac os, its select+enter. elsewhere it varies from file manager to file manager.

the thing that it *is* f2 on is explorer, which (like some file managers in gnu/linux) can be integrated with the desktop. funnily enough, my own distro includes pcmanfm and so f2 is the default for"rename." thats a coincidence, the pcmanfm author probably felt that windows = standard too. what is the key for"rename" in antix, do you know? --not a rhetorical question.

There is currently no keyboard shortcut for renaming files in antiX. If there is, it should be listed alongside the others on the context menu (such as Copy, Ctrl + C).

Which"the context menu"?

When using spacefm file manager, you don't even need to visit context menu. (hold that thought)
If any given item in right-pane has focus (a directory, a file), pressing F2 does indeed open a"rename" dialog.
Actually, in keeping with linux parlance, it's labeled as the"move" dialog.
(bonus points: If you visit the spacefm project page and read the extensive docs... you'll discover a feature called"Design Mode" which enables you to perform wildly creative customizations -- add custom commands into the spacefm context menu, change context menu labels...)

When using rox file manager (aka"rox-filer"), you can DIY easily set custom keybinds ~~ IOW, no"feature request" is warranted.
HOWEVER, back to the hold that thought I mentioned above...

What I'm describing in this post, it requires changing file manager preferences away from the (antiX default)"single click" activation behavior.
(ummmm, maybe not"requires", but is"difficult to comfortably use", IMO)

To change for spacefm:
spacefm toolbar, Click"View" ---} Preferences. untick"single-click opens files".
That way, with double-click necessary to"open"... your first click just focuses/selects (and gives you opportunity to press F2 for the move/rename dialog)
If you find that spacefm already _is_ set for double-click... scusa (I can't recall whether that's the as-shipped default)

To change for rox (affects the behavior of rox-filer file manager, and the behavior when handling rox-managed desktop icons):
right-click any desktop icon, and choose"Options" from the context menu
or
launch rox-filer, and choose"Options" from the context menu
-=-
Browse around, check out the various configurable rox options. The immediate goal is to untick"single-click navigation".

IIRC, you can freely set, or change, the keybind for ANY command exposed in the rox context menu.
To do so, right-click to raise the context menu, mouse around to raise a particular flyout submenu (if appropriate)
and mousehover the command whose keybind you wish to alter. Whatever key(s) you press while hovering, immediately becomes the keybind (shortcut key) associated with rox's activation of that hovered command.

@skidoo, your IMO duly noted, iĀ find the opposite

re spacefm
untick single not necessary
tick hover beside it

then hovering over file/folder focuses
f2 brings up rename option

cheers

as i knew that antix included spacefm, i was surprised by the implication that f2 didnt work the same as in pcmanfm (could happen-- didnt expect it though.)

thanks for setting things straight on that skidoo, f2 *is* rename (move) in spacefm as well. another note: in pcmanfm when you use f2, the dialog uses the word"rename"

for those wondering what this is about: spacefm is based (on the design of, if not the code of) pcmanfm-- and spacefm is the/one of the file managers in antix.
