A goodie I cannot be without on any pc, esp. for older, slow machines/netbooks.
Classic 2 pane file manager.
Do not use the successor Emelfm2, it's just slower not much else added.
Emelfm can be easily configured for individual needs.
So quick to f.ex se up symlinks and unpack archives with this.
In order to install it go to

and set up Etch main repo from there. Install Emelfm.
Perfect beside mc and roxfiler.

I'm a big fan of Norton Commander pre windows and Midnight Commander on linux...
I tried adding etch main to repo list and installing with synaptic, but it said I had broken packages.
I tried again with apt-get and got errors...
So, can you say how you install it onto antiX 16? I have the 386 full version.

I quite liked emelfm, but found that I just kept on using mc, so no longer worry about which file manager is on a distro, I just install mc if it isn't already there. __{{emoticon}}__

I don't recommend anyone try installing this. After 3 hours of trying I can't get around the key errors. None of the internet suggestions work.

Afterwards, I tried installing it from source, but it looks pretty hopeless. It required gtk1.2 and that required glib1.2 and that conflicts with antix's version of xmms because it uses a different glib1.2. It didn't matter because there was no way I could even get things to compile.
All told, 4 or 5 hours spent, and it will take at least a an hour or two to remove all the things I had to install to try to install it.
I've always been a fan of 2 panel file managers and have been looking for for a lightweight one with drag and drop forever it seems.

So that looks like big time trouble...
Anyway, this led me to Double Commander and Worker, and they are on the debian repos, so I'm looking at them now

Totally agree! That's exactly what I do myself. MC is just such a versatile file manager, I don't know how I would manage without it.fatmac wrote:I quite liked emelfm, but found that I just kept on using mc, so no longer worry about which file manager is on a distro, I just install mc if it isn't already there. __{{emoticon}}__

Sorry to hear about the dependency trouble.
I forgot, been a while since I did a fresh antiX install. Should have mentioned this..
Yes, in antiX it's best not to use the repo, just get the single package.
Have noticed the different library versions, have solved this by running Emelfm package through Alien to tgz and back as there are no real differences
that emelfm cares about. Easily converted for use in Slackware (not strictly needed, tgz pckages can be found).
One must definitely keep the antiX library versions.
Old, simple program, have it in Mint, Salix, antiX.
Yes mc rocks but I find this even easier for some archive and symlnk operations I do from time to time.

Thanks for coming back and explaining. Your alien based install did work. gdebi wasn't needed. I did a dpkg -i and that installed the converted .deb file.
Its a shame about the install, as I have to reload to recover because debian-keyring can't be deinstalled and took 50+ mb. I had assumed at the time that it could be deinstalled.
As for emelfm I agree its pretty good for a simpler X windows capable file manager. I'm still using SpaceFM and MC most of the time and like Double Commander, so not sure what I'll end up using long term.
