Hi
I have some files i need to get onto my Laptop from my External Hard drive I have plugged it in but it does not show up anywhere (Solved this problem i installed USBMount now i can see the drive WELL I THINK I SEE THE DRIVE i can open it and view files off the External Hardrive BUT am unable to drag anything into it ferom my laptop i get an error message when trying to do the simplest task like dragging a file from My Laptop to My External Hardrive ..Im trying to drag and drop though probably doing something wrong and you cant drag and drop in a normal way i keep getting an error message saying for example
Moving /home/bob/Documents/bikes.flv as /media/usb/bikes.flv
mv: cannot create regular file `/media/usb/bikes.flv': Permission denied
Failed to move /home/bob/Documents/bikes.flv as /media/usb/bikes.flv

Done
There was one error.

Grateful for any help as its very very frustrating and after a solid hour of trying im rapidly losing my patience im not sure why this is proving so difficult to do It should be such a simple task
Thanks

This is likely just a permissions problem.
What filesystem is on your external drive, who owns the mountpoint?

(Personally, I would just use 'sudo' to mount & transfer files between them.)

Hi fatmac thanks for the reply i have no idea what filesystem is on my external hard drive or who owns the mountpoint (to be honest i dont even know what that means!)
and as for using sudo to do it ..again no idea i have completely exhausted my patience for the moment for such a simple task this is the reason i think some versions of Linux are not for many people such as myself and admit defeat easily i thought i was doing well with my transition to linux from Windows and do enjoy using Linux Mint which i have my main comp and all this is taken care of quite easily there yes i know the answer would probably be install Mint but there is a part of me that wont be fully defeated that quickly but im getting there!!...i should not be getting this annoyed with what should be a 30 second operation im in danger of launching my laptop into my garden and will have a look later
Thanks alot for taking the time to reply anyway

gibbo, among my posts you'll see that I too got tripped up (search keyword="mount" author="skidoo") trying to mount drives.
There's a bootline parameter (aka"cheat") automount=all
which I think I had changed to =none (for the sake of"security" or whatever)
but even with =all specified in bootline I do recall"wrestling with" the task of mounting -- same as you've described.

Viewing one or all of the following video tutorials may be helpful to you
(in general, beyond the immediate goal of mounting partitions of an external drive)

Hi fatmac
Many Thanks for taking the time to reply ive just given up and admitted defeat i did really enjoy AntiX and may still re-install it at a later date but this has just flummoxed me completely and made me feel such an idiot for a task that should really be as simple as mounting an External hard drive i dont want to be wasting 2-3 hours looking for a solution and getting wound up over a simple task its just ridiculous all i want to do is use my computer to do everyday tasks and im afraid the difficulties i have encountered in doing this has driven me away
I am pretty much a newbie i ditched Windows in favour of Linux Mint a few months ago as i had the same problem when trying out Linux for the first time a while back and thought this would help me learn a completely new Operating system and it has i can pretty much solve Mint problems when they arise (They dont arise that often everything just seems to work) , i know i picked an" easy" distro to start dipping my Linux toes in , i feel i have learned alot from it and ive come a long way since day 1 of complete frustration with anything Linux
But im afraid AntiX to me is just not as user friendly and i just dont want to be constantly on here asking stupid questions after searching the net for ages for a simple problem such as this i just dont have the time ,patience or the inclination to do so i
For me a computer system should be easy to use and a tool for helping people carrying out everyday tasks easier ... and should evolve with that as their goal learning a new system is all very well but this is such a simple operation and command lines and hunting for hours just to mount a hard drive surely should not be necessary in 2015 ... its not a criticism of anything AntiX and im grateful that so many people take the time to come up with various distros for idiots like me to try and ..Ive tried enough of them!! i guess some people have the capacity pick it up alot quicker i just dont think im ready for AntiX yet
Thankyou to everybody who took the time to respond to my simple questions
