I am just posting from a Emachines Desktop that my wife just brought home that was sitting by the dumpster in the alley next to another old tower/Desktop made by IBM (Aptiva 2156). I haven't hooked up the IBM yet to see what it has yet.
I am running AntiX 11 Base right now in live mode. Connected through ceni via a wireless USB I have.
As you can see. No errors running live anyways. This is just too cool. Running AntiX from a trashed computer with Windows ME installed.

This unit only has 512MB of ram and a 10gig IDE Hardrive. But the processor has more CPU than my Frankenstein IBM NetVista M41.
Has internal Card readers, DVDRW, 6 USB ports, Not too shabby for 0 dinero.
Now I'm gonna disconnect this unit and see if the old Aptiva powers up and what it has. Probably not enough ram to boot AntiX maybe.
Not sure why you are getting leafpad errors running as root. None of my installs exhibit this. Maybe you are right about the font changes since this post is just from a stock live session.
