If you have a weak CPU and low RAM, you may want to edit your ~/.conkyrc file.

Change

Well, it might work, but it did not make enough difference to measure, in my case...

remove all graphs, and any process viewing will help alot.
edit: also changing the probe time from every second to every 3 seconds helps
