I've been meaning to post for sometime now, but I finally have a week to break, restore, and tune my PCs that will fit my needs hopefully running antiX.
This is my second post, so I'm still learning how to navigate the forum __{{emoticon}}__ . I have two projects underway...
First is to install antiX base as a mini personal webserver to replace ubuntu server 7.04 (see

)
Then testdrive antix-kdebase as a main distro for my laptop (currently running Mepis 6.5).
I hope all go well and from what I've read thus far, antiX will be a good fit for me. I am a KDE user, but I'm interested in learning something new for the short break I have in between grad semesters.

I would suggest installing the latest releas 7.5. With all the work that has gone into it you will really appreciate it. For your web server, Antix comes with lighttpd, a small server that should fit most needs.

I was thinking about 7.5 and I saw in this post on ML:

there is a upgrade script I was thinking about using it to upgrade to it. I usually use download .iso that are official released. Do you think it will work for the kde-base ISO?
Thanks eriefisher, eriefisher wrote:I would suggest installing the latest releas 7.5. With all the work that has gone into it you will really appreciate it. For your web server, Antix comes with lighttpd, a small server that should fit most needs.

I don't think so but Anti may be able to tell you. I think it's because of the version that the kde-base used. The script was set up for 7.2(i will check).
Still I think if you install 7.5 you will be happy with it and won't miss kde at all especially if you use icewm as it has everything you will need. It should still look familiar to you as you use kde now.

Currently finishing the kde-lite .iso download now.
Thanks... I'll give it a try then. I've seemed to have misplaced the antiX base ISO I downloaded last month, so I need to download it again... I'll just go for 7.5.eriefisher wrote:I don't think so but Anti may be able to tell you. I think it's because of the version that the kde-base used. The script was set up for 7.2(i will check).

Be careful with upgrading the kde-lite!
To install, you may need to open a terminal, sux, root password, minstall.
I just tested it and upgrading works well, but you need care.
Firstly, if you want to upgrade the kde-lite version, then you don't need to use the antiX-upgrader script as it upgrades fluxbox and icewm (not kde)
Instead use the smxi script.

Once you have downloaded the smxi script, follow the instructions.
You can do it in VirtualBox.
Open a terminal, su, root password, smxi
This will drop you to a virtual terminal (you may need to hit Enter to see the login prompt)
Login as root user
Type smxi, follow instructions.
The dist-upgrade is huge, 250MB, but it works perfectly!
DO NOT CHOOSE THE CLEAN CRUFT OPTION as mepis-config will get roved, removing /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/sudoers in the process!!!
Make sure you have backups of those files, before cleaning the cruft. (It is ok to remove mepis-config ond restore the backed up files)
Explore the wonderful smxi script!! You can install lots of stuff including ati/nvidia drivers, new-kernels.
I installed, kde-full, kde-pim, kde-extras, koffice, ms fonts, java flash all without a problem.
have fun!
