Running smxi when I powered this on. I saw that 12 packages were going to be removed. system.d being one of them.

I have not thought this through yet. Brain kinda overheated from outside work. So I thought I'd let some clearer heads have a look see and tell me
if it safe for me to proceed?

Oh yeah, here is new error on me also. I already have slim uninstalled on this netbook and log in on init 3 screen with startx. I don't feel like totally
breaking this yet if I can get away with it.

First off, I think you mentioned something about systemd... To get the"init 3" style startup with systemd you may have to replace the symlink: {from"/"}

Code: Select all

etc/systemd/system/default.target
with one pointing at:

Code: Select all

/lib/systemd/system/runlevel3.target
Then which Desktop Manager is installed {AKA slim} won't much matter anymore.

Me, I'd recomend backing up your current system, and then pull the trigger.

If it works your happy. If it breaks, well thats why you made a fresh backup...

Good luck!

Turned it off till I ponder this further. Hopefully 14 will come out and I can just grab what I wanna keep off of this and reinstall.
Even if it broke. A live usb stick would grab what I need. I can live with it the way it is for awhile longer.

If you took the decision, in the first place, to install a rolling distro on that computer, why don't you have the courage of your convictions? Maybe something safe, like Ubuntu, would have been a better choice?

And if you, as one of the team, don't have the nerve to update, what message is that sending out to any newcomers reading this?

Of course, this is just my opinion, and opinions are like arseholes - everybody has one, and you don't have to listen to mine.

I am unloading brick from a truck and stacking it up in 120F heat.

I don't have the energy at the end of the day to troubleshoot while doing this.
So you can take that Ubuntu recommend and your body and come out here and help me unload that truck.

See how well your computer skills function after sweating buckets all day and working out your muscles.
I'll get to it when I get to it.

Actually, I suspect that if they've now taken out systemd it could be time for me to do another update. I only just finished reinstalling for, what it must be the sixth time. Different things go wrong every time. Not my fault if you asked the question right now. __{{emoticon}}__

Looks like I was smart to wait.

Instead of 12 removals today. I am down to 3. SysVinit being one of them instead of systemd.

Doing dist-upgrade now via smxi.
Finished. Reinstalled slim. systemd ran a fsck on both my kernels and hung.
Used the shift key repeatedly to finish up.
Got a slim login screen on both kernels.
All is right now,
