It does have a floppy reader, but it's the only machine with one, can I still make a plop? How do I from my broken install?

Hey, can someone move my thread to here: antix-m8-5-marek-edelman-f40.html ? I seem to have posted in the wrong spot. Sorry.

tnt1.

You said you can login, but you get no X display.
After logging in did you type startx? If so, what happens? Any messages?

You may need to remove your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

To do so, as root, open mc (midnight commander), naviagate to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and delete F*.
Then reboot

Open pcmanfm or rox file manager. Use the up arrow till you see a folder named var. open it. look for log. open it. look for xorg.0.log.

or Open terminal

Code: Select all

sux
enter password. type in when you see the #

Code: Select all

leafpad /var/log/xorg.0.log
sopy and paste contents in next post using code tags.

If you are logging in but get no X display, then pcmanfm won't work. From the prompt you can type

vim /var/log/xorg.0.log

to see the contents of that file.

Yip, I am, thanks again guys. I added a 5Gb swap as well now, so it's a wee bit faster...

What exactly are the specs for that box?

inxi -F.

I thought you had 256 MB RAM.
If you have only 64MB RAM, then antiX will not run fast.
You can get it to run faster and use less RAM if you cut down on unneeded services running eg wicd if you don't need it.

Yeah, I initially had 256Mb of ram, but then I had a hardware failure, had to strip it down and rebuild to find the faulty bit that was preventing boot, it seems to have been the RAM... I will fire it up as soon as the power here comes back on and post inxi -F for ya... (it's battery is toast, so mains only and we have a power failure here, oh, the joy of Africa __{{emoticon}}__ )
