Hello,
Need help to remaster antix and create a distro for my work needs!!!
Explanation:
In my work there are many pcs with windows. Various computers (from Pentium III to Quad Core and from 256MB RAM to 8GB RAM). I want to install Linux in my colleague pcs. I have test and remaster various distros but the best and fastest is Antix.
Needs:
I want to create a Linux with the following desktop. In desktop must be My Computer (home), My network, Trash. In Status bar must be the Menu, showing the running programs, clock, network info, keyboard layout. My colleagues uses only internet browsing, MS-Office.
Questions:
I am thinking to install Antix base with XFCE - base from smxi. Is there lighter method to install only the required packets????
For office I am thinking to use Abiword and Gnumeric for light and Libreoffice for full support.Do you think I must use something else???
For the browsing I am thinking to use Midori or Cometbird for light usage and Firefox or Chromium or Srware Iron for heavy works!!!! Do you have suggest me something different??

Thanks for your time !!!!

P.S. I hope the XFCE use don’t make the Linux very mush slower!!!!

I run xfce on several p3's
for the most part it is not to noticable (as long as you have a decent amount of ram). However when you get into the 3d effects / transparencies it does.
iceweasel + libreoffice +icedove works solid for me, though they are not the most light options.

Do you have install XFCE full? Use apt-get install xfce4, via smxi or via metapackages?? I don’t want to use 3d effects except windows transparent (for conky black box background).

I used apt-get -f install xfce4 for simplicity sake.
If I am going for a lighter version then I start to specify only the packages that I wish to have EG: apt-get -f install xfce4-session xfwm4 xfce4-mount-plugin etc....

Uhm,
I installed the full xfce4 suite and then choose the packages I wanted from a package list"dpkg -l > packages.txt", this may not be the best way to do it so maybe use synaptic and click the sections button, scroll down the list above the button and choose xfce desktop environment, or google minimal xfce install

Or use the meta-installer app alredy included in antiX.
Under window managers, it gives a chice of basic xfce and a full version.

To check out what debian offers for xfce go to packages.debian.org
Have a browse at the “View the packages in the …. Distribution”, where there is an xfce section. Or start off in “Search package directories”, “Keyword” eg xfce4, and Distribution” eg any. That’ll set off an exploration for you!
