Welcome to antiX amos.
AS you posred this is the antiX-M8-Intifada section, I'll presume you are using that version. (It is a bit old though)
Type inxi -F in a terminal and paste the result here so we can see your hardware specs and which antiX version ou are using.
Synaptic is in the antiX control centre -System-Manage Packages.
To play audio cds, put it in the cd player, open xmms (music player), click on left tab at top to open a drop down menu, play location, /media/cdrom should be available, if not type it in.

So far so good!
Beware of the updates though. There will be lots of them as the version you have installed is not the latest release. You might want to try the latest release, or even the test beta3. (though it is a beta, it is working very well).
If you want to keep the M8 version and are happy with what it has and want a stable version, it is better to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list so updates will only be for security.

If i was to try the latest release would i have to download, burn another iso image and then re-install or is there another way? Sorry to be such a nuisance.

Yes, that would be the best way.
Since antiX-M8 was released there have been many changes and there might be problems with upgrading with the repos left as they are.
