After watching the videos Dolphin-Oracle made of antix, I decided I would try the core rebuild as per his videos. I figured that doing this would help me to envision what Linux was doing on my system. (My head injury back in 2009 has left HUGE gaps in my memory, including lots of the earlier development of linux since I started with it in 1993.)

Step one was easy. I rewatched Dolphin's videos and printed out the video descriptions.

Finding my cd's of antix 13.1-core was harder. __{{emoticon}}__ (I have too many extra cd's hanging around.) But I got started. I already knew that the 3.7.10-gnu-antix.3-486-smp kernel was going to need to be changed, but I figured I would do that later. And I had already partitioned my HD with several 20Gb ext4 partitions for linux with MX-14. __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

It wasn't brain surgery. __{{emoticon}}__ (Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Follow the yellow brick road.) I simply followed the steps Dolphin outlined. I figured my best bet was to load up everything as I went. And once I had a"working" gui, I would then change the kernel to something newer. I just made sure I used the SAME partition everytime. (Don't even ask how many times I screwed up my extended partition by forgetting this one. I had to put up a bulletin board next to this laptop just for post-it notes.)

Finally, I got my desktop working. __{{emoticon}}__ I started trying out various programs, and found a big clitch. NO SOUND! __{{emoticon}}__ WTF. I did everything"by the book". No sound on YouTube. No sound in vlc. No sound on any music players. Did I miss something? Had I goofed up? __{{emoticon}}__ __{{emoticon}}__

It was the obvious and the one you forget about. YES, I did have sound, But it was turned LOW. __{{emoticon}}__ HOW, you ask? It appears that the program alsamixergui has the sound levels set about 70% so it won't blow your ears out. Re-adjusting the levels to 100% solved my sound problems. __{{emoticon}}__

Updated the kernel to 3.14.2-486 i686 32 bit. Lean and mean. __{{emoticon}}__ Only 94 Mb memory used (and this is while I am typing this.) Now to put this on a cd as bootable ans try it out on the old JUNKBOX.
