Hi,
I now have a computer running AntiX at work.
It is plugged to a network running mostly Windows XP machines.
i would like to know what is the best way to connect the AntiX computer to a printer and to shared directories on some of the Windows computers?
Of note, the computers do not have a fixed IP address.
Can they be detected by using their network names (such as http:\\i110754-pharmco). The computers are on institutional group called"sim.umontreal.ca".
I have tried this but I cant seem to detect them.
Samba is installed on the AntiX computer.
Thanks

Follow the instructions on this link. Should let you see the shared folders.

If you want to connect to a shared XP printer you will need to install smbclient from the repositories.
This allows you to see smb shared printers on the network.
You will more than likely also need to install the printer driver for the target printer before attempting installation as there are not many available in the antiX default install.

Do I understand correctly that it is imperative for the Linux computer on a Windows network to have a fixed IP address, so as to make it possible to have it detected by other computers?
Any way to work with a dynamically attributed address?

You should not need a fixed address. I have win2000, XP, Mepis8, and antiX8.5 all on my home network and they all have DHCP assigned addresses via a WRT54G router.
If you want to use fixed IP addresses they will work just fine as long as they are in the IP range of your router (your companies router)
With smbnetfs, you will not see YOUR antiX folders via the other Windows computers. You will only be able to access the shared folders on the XP computers via antiX.
Even when I have been unable to get samba sharing to work on other distro's I have always been able to get smbnetfs to work.
