has anyone had experience with Chrome laptop/desktop ?
is it as simple as repartitioning the hard drive, then installing a Linux variation on it ?

not typically. most chrome notebooks use hardware not real common in the linux world yet. On my asus 720, the touchpad and sound do not work. I've only tried running liveUSB, as my HD is only 16 gb in the chromebook. some chrome computers are running arm processors are well, so you've got that to look for too.
and the bios/system settings on chromebooks are more locked down. Really, I gave up as not worth it on the chromebook. There are some 'bunutus that supposedly work, and there are ways to run a chroot debian environment using something called cruton (not sure on spelling). but its not as simple as picking up a liveUSB and running install.

All that came about because I wanted a bigger hard drive so I could try and dual boot.
After that scare, It became ChromeOS only.

Thank you for your responses.
This deflates my illusion of finally buying a Windows-less laptop.
But doesn't Acer sell Linpus Linux, Windowsless laptops in Taiwan ? why the BIOS limitation, then ?

the locked-down bios is a google requirement for chromeos. chromeos is not open-source, despite being based on the chromium-os project.
there is absotuley nothing wrong with buying a chromebook, and chromeos is crazy responsive. just do your research, as you are limited to what linux variants you can put on a particular chromebook.

. It allows you to run Ubuntu on top of chromeos. You can switch between the two with a keystroke.

Depends on whether you are OK with wiping your drive completely or if you want both ChromeOS and Linux to co-exist on the SSD. Here's a good post about setting up Debian on an Acer C720:
