Hi,
I am unable to figure out how to see the contents of my usb drive. when i plug it in, it shows up in the filemanger but when i try to open or mount it, there is error message, either"failed to mount <drive name> not authorised" .
Earlier only after extensive search was i able to get how to mount NTFS partitions on internal hdd. Ratheer tedious way to do that, and there seems to be no away to automount these interanl partitions or the USB. Volume management in the system settings does not have any affect on the results.
Is it goodbye Antix - like other linux distros - and back to winxp. i would hate that.
please help me with a simple workable solution.....
thanks

When you mount in the file manager (Thunar) ignore the error and see if it opens in rox-filer under /media.
Also try this.
As root rename /etc/udev/rules.d/99-usbstorage.rules.unused to 99-usbstorage.rules
usb devices should auto-mount in /media folder. Use rox-filer rather than thunar

Anti:
Thanks for the suggestion. Renaming that file solved the problem for me.

Hi Anti:
Thank you for your reply. the first part did not work. however, renaming the file did the job.
Actually when i installed antix, i got into the problem of not being able to mount the internal ntfs and other partitions. However, by extensive searching in the posts i got thru to a solution and now everytime i have to open the rox-filer as root to be able to mount and use the partitions.
Meanwhile, i landed up with the usb issue which you have helped me to solve.
My question as a newbie to ANTIX (very impressive otherwise on my old machine) is why can't we have an easier way to do both the above jobs which I have to do everytime i login. Maybe some sort of script which i can launch from the desktop to activate the partitions & the usb. Pmount, volume management, removable media utilities do not work.
I have to run with the ntfs for some time until i completely switch over from win xp.
I am on a dual-boot of Antix and Winxp.
I will be really thankful for an easier and permanent solution.
regards,
Mytor

I am usually running under LXDE.
The solution to mounting the usb stick worked only one day, as the /media directory shows the name of the usb stick i had plugged in then. when i plug in another nothing happens and the old stikc name remains. when you click on that, it is empty.
My /etc/fstab listing:
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0
/dev/sda9 / ext3 defaults,noatime 1 1
/dev/sda11 /home ext3 defaults,noatime 1 2
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 vfat noauto,users,gid=users,dmask=002,fmask=113,relatime 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 ntfs-3g defaults,noauto,users,noexec,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0
/dev/sda5 /mnt/sda5 ntfs-3g defaults,noauto,users,noexec,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0
/dev/sda6 /mnt/sda6 vfat noauto,users,gid=users,dmask=002,fmask=113,relatime 0 0
/dev/sda7 /mnt/sda7 vfat noauto,users,gid=users,dmask=002,fmask=113,relatime 0 0
/dev/sda8 /mnt/sda8 ntfs-3g defaults,noauto,users,noexec,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0
/dev/sda10 swap swap sw,pri=1 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
i regularly want to use sda1 (fat), sda7 (fat) and sda8(ntfs).
Thanks for all your help.

Delete that folder in /media and any hidden files.
Then try the stick again by looking in rox /media. You will have to unmount in rox as well. One issue is that rox and thunar and the udev rules you enabled don't work well together which is why antiX-M11 comes with that udev rules file disabled (but ready to go).
Do the sda1 (fat), sda7 (fat) and sda8(ntfs) partitions mount as user?

1. USB stick does not show up after doing what was suggested. on plugging in says"not authorized".
2. As user i can mount and see all fat partitions, but ntfs i still no go. dialog box opens asking to mount the partition, but fails with the standard ntfs message. But no problem using the ntfs via the route you suggested - login as root and fire rox-filer command and it is on.
thanx for all the advise.

ok. thanks for the advice.
temporarily i have got something working in this order.
login - lxde
open root terminal
command rox-filer
in the filer move upto /mnt
mount whichever partition (fat or ntfs) needed
move around in roc-filer or x-file manager (avoid thunar as was suggested)
for usb do the same and if usb shows up in rox, scan so that the dispaly is of the current usb.
seems to be working presently. if i get stuck will ask for help once again....
gaining in confidence in antix and likley to stick on.
cheers
