Hello,
after successful installation of Antix on old ThinkPad T42 I am trying to install it on
HP laptop with Centrino and 1GB of RAM. It is even more modern __{{emoticon}}__ than old ThinkPAD.
Using the same installation CD. After entering cli-installer first thing I get is:

cp: cannot copy a directory '/live/aufs/root' into itself, './root

The drive is sda1. I wiped partitions. The same result. I hit NO for all options.
Finally it runs without stopping the line

Cannot change root directory to /media/sda1: no such file or directory /dev/s0 at live/boot-dev (not sure for this last thing I wrote it on paper and now cannot identify what I wrote __{{emoticon}}__ .

But all upper part is intact.

What do you suggest?

Thanks.

Uhm, did you make new partitions after wiping them.
It sounds as though you have cleared all partitions, then the installer tries to mount sda1 with sda1 existing. Therefor trying to copy the files from running in ram to the same spot.

no, I didn't create a new partition.
But the result is the same as it was when XP existed.

Would you suggest to create a partition for full drive size?

Partitioning is a personal thing, but you can create a swap partition if you want to, (1gb), then a suitable sized partition for your system, (10gb = plenty, 5gb = sufficient, depends how much extra software you intend installing), and then the rest of the disk in another partition for your files, (/home).

fatmac,

my question is more about how to tackle the issue with installation.
Ideally, I don't want to do any manual operation during installation.

So I wiped partitions.

I guess I have some problem. From your answer I understood that Antix should take care about partitioning when I answer no for the question Do you want to partition the drive.

What I have to do in order to troubleshoot my installation problem.
The laptop just run XP. 1 GB of RAM. Don't think I need a swap partition.
And I am not planning to abuse it. Interned and editor. It is just my 7th laptop for listing internet at my friend location, when all other comps are busy __{{emoticon}}__

Does it boot into A live session?
Maybe run the gui installer instead?

Even though you say successful T42 installation.
Was a md5sum check done on your AntiX iso?

Need more info from A live session running.
so A

Code: Select all

inxi -F
would be a big help in this thread
also.

Since you are installing from a LIVE cd, you should be able to make you own partition for antiX. As fatmac suggested, make a swap partition about 1000MB, and a antix partition (I would use ext4) of about 10-15 Gb. You can shrink the win XP partition down to give you room for this.

How large a hard drive do you have? Do you still have win xp installed? If I know this, then I can help you work with it.

thanks for your suggestions...

as I mentioned the partition was wiped out. so no xp. I realized by myself that to install OS the partition should exist.
Don't know why it didn't install when XP was there and partition did exist.

Now it doesn't matter because I just boot live from CD again. This time I decided with PAE CD (just to be sure the CD is OK).
PAE didn't run on T42. But run well on this Centrino it is HP nc6120. In BIOS I saw that it is year 2006 and I saw before that PAE would work on everything later than 2005 I guess.
Long story short I run installer from within GUI and it installed without any problem.
BTW, I remember now that on T42 I did non PAE from GUI too.

But now I spent 2 hours on trying making work Wireless (didn't have the prob on T42).
So I gave up and decided to"bug" the forum
I found that Wireless is fixable through Control Center. But what a hassle I cannot find it. On tons of screenshot of Antix there is an icon. I CANNOT GET IT. The package gnome-control-center is there. But how to reach it?
My default Desktop whole GUI is limited and I guess I have to load some different. But this is next.

Where is for god sake CONTROL CENTER __{{emoticon}}__ ?

Thanks for this massive input from community!

From your other post about the control center I just realized you are using MX rather than antiX. The two are different (MX is based on antiX).

You are right. It is MX. Because download sites for latest Antix provide it as MX
so where is the Antix only? I need Control Center and not Settings that are in MX.

Because then I need Network settings that all troubleshooting sites talking about.

Where is the latest Antix (July 1 as MX). Or now it is MX version only?

Thanks.
